Johannesburg - Four robbers were arrested on Wednesday for gang-raping a 61-year-old woman in front of her husband, then kidnapping her, said Gauteng police.
It was their inability to account for a cellphone they tried to sell which led to their arrests, said Captain William Mcera. The prospective buyer turned them in, he said.
The four attacked the couple in their home in Ironside, De Deur, on the night of August 24.
They stole valuables, including a cellphone, before taking turns raping the woman.
They took her with them when they drove off in her car, but abandoned both a few kilometres away, instructing the woman to drive back home.
Mcera said the men arrested were aged between 18 and 33. They would appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of house robbery and rape.
The arrests followed those of three men taken into custody for the rape and murder of a much younger woman, whose body was found in an Ironside yard on Monday, he said.
Police launched a search for the men after being told they had spent Sunday night with the woman at a shebeen.
They would also appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Friday, but on charges of rape and murder.
