Johannesburg - Rumours that National Director of Public Prosecution Bulelani Ngcuka will swap his government post for a directorship at diamond giant De Beers, are untrue.
"But we have our suspicions regarding the origin of these rumours," Sipho Ngwema, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said on Sunday.
The Sunday World reported that "senior" sources in government and the private sector confirmed that Ngcuka was planning the move.
Brian Roodt, spokesperson for De Beers, did not want to confirm or deny the rumours on Sunday. "We don't react to speculation or rumours," he said.
Ngwema said the report was based on rumour and that Ngcuka had no plans to resign. He said they believed the rumours to have originated with people "who are investigating us", he said.
Paul Setsetse, spokesperson for the department of justice, said he knew nothing about Ngcuka's alleged plans.
Ngcuka temporarily suspended 35 employees of the NPA's human resources department about two weeks ago because they allegedly created ghost workers.
