Johannesburg - A 36-year-old woman was arrested on 202 charges of fraud on Wednesday in Krugersdorp after allegedly charging a large group of people R600 000 on the promise of work and payment overseas, West Rand police said.
Inspector Yolande Bouwer said police were alerted when they found a group of people in front of the woman's house in Mindalore.
It is alleged that the woman, with the help of agents throughout the country, and advertisements in a local newspaper, got people to apply for jobs overseas with promises of payment in pounds.
Bouwer said the applicants had to each pay R600 into a bank account and apparently had to submit themselves to security checks.
She said before the supposed overseas flights, the agents postponed the signing of the contracts as well as the departure dates.
When a number of applicants arrived at the woman's house on Wednesday, they were apparently told that there were no jobs for them and their money could not be refunded."
The woman will appear in the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court soon.
