Cape Town - A Stellenbosch police officer was hospitalised with serious gunshot wounds on Tuesday after being attacked and robbed of his handcuffs and sandwiches while on his way to work.
Captain Eugene Sitzer for the Eastern Metropole police, said the officer, inspector Edward (Oupa) Ndotshajisa, was on his way to work when he was attacked near the Maroela bridge close to Kraaifontein.
"An unknown number of men approached him in an open veld and fired at him. He was shot in the stomach twice," said Sitzer.
He said Ndotshajisa, who was in uniform at the time of the attack, had not been carrying a weapon.
An emergency operation was carried out on the officer. By late Tuesday afternoon his condition was stable but still serious.
