Cape Town - Western Cape police destroyed more than 1 000 firearms in Kuils River, near Cape Town, on Tuesday.
Captain Etienne Terblanche said the majority of the firearms were confiscated by police as illegal.
Other weapons destroyed were redundant state firearms as well as firearms voluntarily surrendered by the public. They included shotguns, rifles, automatic rifles, pistols and revolvers.
Terblanche said all the weapons were melted down in the presence of police and the metal will be recycled.
