Pretoria - A helicopter was being sent to evacuate residents from the roof of Kruger Park flats after a fire broke out in the building, Pretoria police said on Tuesday.
Sergeant Harris Seanego said police and fire officials were trying to bring the fire, which started around 11:00 under control.
"It is still burning," he said.
The fire broke out on the 20th floor and all above floors were also burning.
"A helicopter is coming to help those on the top of the roof," he said.
The number of people stranded inside the building was not immediately known.
Seanego said the cause of the fire, and whether it was related to the earlier protest over evictions from the neighbouring Schubart Park flats, was not known.
He said no casualties had been reported.
