Pretoria - The despair about a stillborn puppy soon turned to joy for Noon, a German Shepherd, after she spontaneously adopted four "orphaned" puppies.
Noon is one of Cornfield's Kennels breeding stock at Pyramid outside Pretoria.
The four orphans - crosses between a bullterrier and a Staffordshire - ended up in Noon's care after Julie Prinsloo one of Cornfields' owners, saved them from certain death.
The puppies' mother had been abandoned and a veterinarian put her down before she gave birth.
When Prinsloo arrived shortly afterwards, she asked the vet to check whether the puppies were still alive and to take them out.
Four of the eight survived and she took them home with her.
She started feeding them with a syringe - and then Noon took over.
Prinsloo said Noon grew very fond of the puppies and adopted them in the place of her stillborn one.
Prinsloo said: "All Noon doesn't understand is why the puppies bite her when she tries to carry them in her mouth.
"German Shepherds do this, but it isn't common among bullterriers."
