Johannesburg - Kungwini Mayor Mike Siphiri has resigned after allegations that he did not follow procedure when buying land worth R1m, a Gauteng local government spokesperson said on Saturday.
Themba Sepotokele said Siphiri, who acquired the land while he was still a councillor in Bronkhorstpruit, resigned on Friday.
"Mr Siphiri resigned verbally at a meeting on Friday, but we are still waiting for written confirmation," Sepotokele said.
The matter was still being investigated, he said.
At the meeting in Kungwini on Friday, municipal manager Lolo Ditsego was suspended on allegations of maladministration and corruption.
"He was suspended last year on the very same charges. He was later reinstated without the knowledge of the MEC," Sepotokele said.
