Six robbers sentenced to death

Lagos - A northern Nigerian court has sentenced six people to death after they were found guilty of armed robbery, the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Tuesday.
A High Court in the northern State of Gombe on Monday sentenced Itama Jacob, Gowon Ahmadu, Isa Ibrahim, Danjuma Abu, Linus Paris and Babangida Mohammad to death after it found them guilty on two out of three counts they were charged with, said NAN.
Prosecutor Aliyu Abubakar had told the court that the accused in company of two others had on March 31 2000 conspired and robbed the Gombe grain market.
He also told the court that the accused were also found in possession of arms and ammunition without a licence at Jankai Quarters in the city of Gombe the state capital, said NAN.
The accused who had pleaded not guilty to the charges, did not call any witness.
Long delays are common in Nigerian court cases.
