Rasta singer accused of treason

Cape Town - Furious members of Parliament have accused the reggae singer who butchered the national anthem on Friday night, of treason.

Ras Dumisani, who sang the anthem before the rugby match between the French and the Springboks in Toulouse, France, would have been embarrassed had he appeared before the parliamentary portfolio committee for sport on Tuesday.

"It is treason! I don't know how he could get onto the stage if he couldn’t sing the anthem. He is ready for retirement," stated committee member and ANC MP, Litho Suka.

He said an apology alone was not good enough, and that the South African official who had recommended Dumisani to the French, should also be held accountable.

'Pathetic version'

Butana Komphela, ANC MP and committee chairperson, also wanted to know why nobody had checked beforehand whether "that rasta man" could sing.

"Our anthem is our pride, but that was a pathetic version."

Komphela phoned Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union, immediately after the test to convey his displeasure.

Committee members want to talk to the Department of International Relations and Co-operation to prevent a repeat of the incident, in which South Africa's flag was also flown upside down.

One possibility was to supply a uniform recording of the national anthem to South African embassies, which could be played at sporting events.

They really waste their time on futile issues when there are far more pressing issues at hand. They spend more time, money and effort in the botch of the national anthem than they do in protecting the people from criminals - look at the article on the police as outlined by the DA.

Tarras Bulba 11/18/2009 9:11:14 AM
Wow. Getting out of hand. TREASON?

Sigh, it is part of the human condition to spend all your energy on trivial matters when there are far worse problems you should really focus on.

TNC 11/18/2009 9:15:27 AM
Oh come one people get over it....Can't you forgive. We forgave Apartheid people... RAS DUMISANI didn't kill anytone... What about the BOEREMAG with their Treason? This is sick... MOVE ON

ewm 11/18/2009 9:16:27 AM
Treason ??? Thats pushing it a bit too far. Yeah, the dude was terrible...lets leave it and move on...making sure it never happens again

A 11/18/2009 9:55:52 AM
Typical - we have so much more serious things to deal with and sort out and Parliament is stuck on this. I can only laugh, really. The guy has been publically humiliated and I honestly think he has paid his dues, move on.

Tall 11/18/2009 9:56:03 AM
I think the guy did commit a mistake, he is a human being like us. I think enough is enough. He has already apologised and why are we still persecuting and nailing him on the cross.

MikeF 11/18/2009 9:56:11 AM
A hatchet job worse than Ras Dumisani’s vandalisation of our National Anthem at the rugby test last Friday evening,
is the public spat conducted by our Ministry of Sport against SARU about the status of the eligibility of Beast to play for the Springboks.

Why do they prefer to handle this matter in the public domain, even to the point of placing paid advertisements in newspapers.
on a platform for the whole world to hear, just before an important test match.

How unsettling this must have been for the player and the team.

I think this is very unprofessional, for a Ministry of Sport to be doing this to one of their own sports code, a highly respected sports code.
The Springbok’s are world champions, and they are treated like naughty school boys by a retributive school master.

Even if SARU are in the wrong on this issue, why did it have to be done in this disrespectful manner.
This is an internal matter, and should have been handled as such.

Surely there is a more dignified way for the Sports Ministry, and the Sports Portfolio Committee,
to deal with sports codes who serve under their jurisdiction

Shame on our Sports Ministry.

Daryl 11/18/2009 9:56:39 AM
Let it rest! They offered an apology. What more can you do.

Win 11/18/2009 9:56:39 AM
If only the government put the same emphasis on issues like crime, poverty and education. Goes to show you where their priorities lie. So he couldn't sing, so what, get over it.

greg 11/18/2009 9:58:00 AM
Fiddling while Rome burns....

Lauren 11/18/2009 9:58:31 AM
Has anyone considered that the French might have DELIBERATELY organised the hideously bad anthem singer plus hanging to SA flag upside down to rattle and unsettle the Springboks before the match? I think some of my investigative journalist colleagues need to go and do some digging...might be interesting to see what they come up with!

tony cape town 11/18/2009 10:05:25 AM
what a waste of time - the guy messed up move on ! Its over !

TLC 11/18/2009 10:09:47 AM
Please people you are getting petty now. There are still grave issues to be attended to e.g. the fiasco at SABC, the meyham at ASA, ESCO, ARMSCOR, the list is endless. Please now spare the RASTA he apologised.

Sinudeity 11/18/2009 10:10:50 AM
Just let it go dudes... just let it go.

praise 11/18/2009 10:11:20 AM
Treason...looks like this word lost its meaning without my knowledge. Aren't there better things to discuss in parliament.

Jammy 11/18/2009 10:13:12 AM
Give Ras Dumisani a break, people! Politicians always blow things out of proposion. This guy has apologised. Unlike Chuene, the Reitz four, Wouter Basson etc. Let s move on. It was just a song for heaven's sake. Nobody was forced to eat urinated food.

Zola 11/18/2009 10:13:58 AM
Hayi, i give up. TREASON!!! Really now...

Truly 11/18/2009 10:17:43 AM
Treason? No, but he sure did murder the song. For what reason the song was attempted by a reggae star, I don't know....it just doesn't go hand in hand with the style. I don't think he will ever be contracted to perform any national anthem ever again, so lets leave him be.

peter 11/18/2009 10:18:11 AM
If they want to try anybody for treason they should look at Eskom's board, Thabo and Manto. They sold the country out!

Devin 11/18/2009 10:20:10 AM
Haha its funny... Ok the guy sang badly... Get over it!

AB 11/18/2009 10:20:20 AM
I so wish our leaders would get this upset about: drunk driving, murder, Malema's constant racist mouthing off, corruption etc etc.....

YEAHRIGHT 11/18/2009 10:22:44 AM
IF RAS CAN BE TRIED FOR TREASON FOR MESSING UP A SONG THEN THE GOVT SHOULD BE TRIED FOR GENOCIDE THE COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF A COUNTRY

LOL 11/18/2009 10:25:02 AM
I think Ras had a bit too much Grass :)

itrollu 11/18/2009 10:26:46 AM

A CASE OF "POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK"

Robin 11/18/2009 10:29:34 AM
We watched it last night to see what all the fuss was about. Its how a Rasta singer sings. This is the style of Reggae. It wasn't as bad as everyone is claiming it to be. To blame our loss on this is ridiculous. Get over it! :)

Charlotte 11/18/2009 10:30:11 AM
Whats done is done, nothing is ever done right so what makes this any different. Build a bridge and get over it. There are bigger problems to worry about.

Themba 11/18/2009 10:30:36 AM
Ohh Nooo!!! just leave Ras alone for now, the guy has apologised to the entire nation, what more do we want. We have other serious matters that our government must attend. Now he's a well known chap.Focus on crime that is killing our citizens.

GKM 11/18/2009 10:31:23 AM
What of ASA, Leonard Chuene treason by getting the nation to want to go to "race" wars again.

Davo 11/18/2009 10:33:41 AM
According to Webster's, the word 'discriminate' means to distinguish between one and another. In our society, the word is much maligned due to the gender, race and other prefixes usually attached. In this case, the process failed to suitably discriminate between an artist of excellence and the one we got. Don't blame the artist, fix the process.

Dave Gray 11/18/2009 10:34:55 AM
This is ridiculous, leave the poor man aone, it was a mistake, it was bad but get over it now. People used to be shot for treason, is this what the fools in parliament want.

Alana Slabber 11/18/2009 10:37:02 AM
Shame don't do that to him!! Does the government not have enough issues to deal with!! Treason!!! Why not send him to Robbin Island and he can be our next president too!!!

Supportive 11/18/2009 10:37:11 AM
Its a good thing that we correct every misuse or wrongs. We cannot let things get out of hand and say we are focusing on crime. Crime is here and will stay for a very long time, we are dealing with it and so is everything else, we cannot afford to wear oogklap and focus on one thing at a time.
National anthem distinguish SA from the rest of the world and say who we are to other nations, if you cannot identify yourself correctly, you send the wrong message and other countries will disrespect you since you cant even sign an anthem correctly something that does not cost anything - you will be the laughing stock on everything. It will say we do not care and we happen to be the bunch of panzis.
Anthem is like your signature, if someone spells it wrong or pronounce it wrong you become very annoyed.
Treason might be the harsh word, but, to defend the national anthem is a right thing to do.
There are other things that we can focus on other than crime, things like development of new technology that will enhance living conditions of everyone in the countries and simultaneously combat crime and poverty. To fight crime solely will not put any food on the table but hybrids of projects will help put the food on the table.

MarkH 11/18/2009 10:37:38 AM
Allegations of treason coming from the same people who spend our money on themselves when their own people are starving, unemployed and diseased is a bit rich, don't you think?
Do this lot understand what treason means?

Mojo 11/18/2009 10:38:27 AM
He was STONED !!!!

Masethe Tshepo 11/18/2009 10:38:57 AM
It is treason. Period.

Jax 11/18/2009 10:39:16 AM
He may have "butchered" the anthem, but I agree treason is one step too far. A recording is a cop out, I'm sure we have many talented singers in Sa who would jump at the chance and the next plane to sing at an event like this?!!!

Tes 11/18/2009 10:41:19 AM
Does EVERYTHING always HAVE to be compared/related to APARTHEID, get over it, people!

Phumla Mali 11/18/2009 10:43:46 AM
Treason is a bit over the top. Yeahh the dude sucked but the people who recommended him to go out there and sing the anthem without checking should be held responsible. My 4 year old son can sing better than the dude but please lets move on it happened now we need to get over it........

Nathan 11/18/2009 10:44:14 AM
Im sure he can sing it fine, the french were playing the tune too fast for the way he sings it. Plus he couldn't hear himself properly as the equipment was bad. I dont think he is must have all the blame.

bokkie 11/18/2009 10:44:25 AM
oh please?! just leave it now, rassie wont smoke pot again.

Julls 11/18/2009 10:46:56 AM
Yeh I agree, let's leave the rasta alone now. We all get an embarassing moment once is a lifetime.

Molefe 11/18/2009 10:47:19 AM
Don't you lot realize that the politicians are just playing this? They hear you lot carry on about it, and now they are being seen "to be doing something about your concerns". They are playing you! Come on people, since when do you believe ANYTHING a politician says? Oxymoron, Honest Politician, just the same as Military Inteligence

Maryna 11/18/2009 10:48:39 AM
I also think the anthem was disgusting, but teason!!! Come on, the law is non existent, hospitals and schools are going down the drain etc. and you loosing it on this!!!!

JoeBurg Joe @ TNC 11/18/2009 10:49:07 AM
Maybe YOU should move on, you mention the past 3 times and still talk about the Boeremag and manage to mention apartheid, what does any of that have to do with a rasta who cant sing?

I'm glad everyone in SA feels the same way about the issue, including the ANC, even if their response is overboard

kolobe 11/18/2009 10:49:11 AM
ras dumisani is a legend...as a comedian

ITpro 11/18/2009 10:49:25 AM
What you gonna do to him? hang him?

KXK 11/18/2009 10:50:29 AM
I find it disappointing that we complain about government spending time on the rasta man rather attending to crime if we all know and can see how seriously they are trying to handle it. I think we need to stop being big babies!! Anything that affects South African pride is worth a debate.......But yes treson is a bit stretched

gnplk 11/18/2009 10:50:35 AM
DUe to incompetence S.A. is once again the laughing stock of the world. I wonder who Julius is going to blame this time?

Andrew P 11/18/2009 10:52:31 AM
I think we, as South Africans are far too used to being embarassed weekly on the international stage that most will just let this one slide. It's not good enough and is a total insult to our country. Ras should have his passport confiscated. Let's be proud of our country for a change.

Valc 11/18/2009 10:53:32 AM
Hey - this guy was singing with such passion but in the wrong key, definitely no malicious intent. Get Real Mon!

Joeman 11/18/2009 10:54:08 AM
Are our politicians trying to shift the attention from the pressing issues that we are facing. The Rasta singing issue is not really an issue but somethig worth a laughter. I believe MPs have got nothing really to do to justify their huge salaries so it's expected that they will use any non- issue to be a major issue. Let's forget about the poor dude as I believe that he went there with pride that he was going to represent his country and be see throughout the world. I really don't think it was his intension to butcher the song. He must be devastated. Let's forgive him

Karen 11/18/2009 10:54:37 AM
Typical!!! Sweat the small stuff. Really our parliamentarians are pathetic. Ar they so insecure that a bad rendition of our anthem is cause for so much anger and such radical action!! The singer made a bit of a fool of himself, but our parliamentarians have always got to go one better and make a compelte idiot of not only themselves, but the entire country.

nigel 11/18/2009 10:55:11 AM
Firstly the responsibility for this should lie with the SARU, they should check out all aspects of the tour arrangements, also why is a singer not flown out to games of such importance, what is treason is, the ANC govt failing its people, failing to deliver services, failing to protect its citizens, failing to stem the influx of illegal immegrants through our borders, failing to control the YL's incitement to violence & racial hatred, failing to stop its own corruption....thats treason.

JMc 11/18/2009 10:57:03 AM
This guy tried his best, it wasn't good enough but he did try. It's not his fault that he was put on the world stage. Blame the South African and French governments for this mess. The south African emassy should screen singers for international sport events where the national anthem is to be sung. Give this guy a break; I'm sure he did it with pride and he thought he was good enough; it's just unfortunate that nobody told him he wasn't.

CTheB 11/18/2009 10:58:36 AM
Treason? Really? The stupid, it burns.

DIGITS 11/18/2009 11:00:42 AM
I personaly don't blame ras'man as I would have sang it myself for the money even though i'm not sure about afrikaans part of it,

BJ 11/18/2009 11:01:53 AM
Its OK to have a decaying infrastructure in this land coupled with crime and violence, but dont be a bad singer cause thats just treason. Does'nt treason carry a life sentence ??? Get a Life man !!!!!~

Karen @Andrew P 11/18/2009 11:04:55 AM
What is there to be proud of? If we had something to be proud of, maybe we could get our knickers in a twist about our anthem sung badly. I think the bad redition of our anthem was quite ironic and a good reflection of the state of our country....

Norman du Plooy 11/18/2009 11:05:32 AM
Singing the anthem poorly results in treason change. Compare that to a racist drunk driving Judge still in his position after found guilty or (racist) ANCYL president speeding and not paying his tickets or intimidating traffic cops. Thus you can drive irresponsible that might lead to someone's death, but don't you DARE make a mess of singing the Anthem!

Nats 11/18/2009 11:05:42 AM
Gee wiz, they are taking this to far. There are more important things to worry about.

norman 11/18/2009 11:07:01 AM
I think that Butana Komphela should charge BA-FUNNY BA-FUNNY with treason, how can any team be so 'KUK'
The rugga rusta atleast made us smile, but those soccer palookas with the word beating pot bellied Benni just make us want to cry.

jackal 11/18/2009 11:07:57 AM
give the guy a break - he must feel like a right fool right now! he did try hard and shame is a song really what binds us? Its our understanding, humility and forgiving ways that will define our nation!

ludwig 11/18/2009 11:09:29 AM
the man has made his appoligies. thats the pride of the rasta that he atleast can admit that he sang badly. not like the people in government that can never say sorry or appoligise for there wrong doing. leave the rasta alone he has appoligise.

ex 11/18/2009 11:09:47 AM
he giving rasta's a bad name - 'cos he was stoned innit

Mayibuye 11/18/2009 11:11:31 AM
He is not the only South African who doesn't understand the full lyrics of the national anthem, surely even our politicians if put on the stage would stumble, they would rather sing it in/with a crowd, to accuse rasta of treason is a sign of boredom. Rastafarii

Concerned 11/18/2009 11:12:03 AM
South Africa should learn from this and start taking matters into their own hands when it comes to preparations for major international events. We should have a fulltime national anthem singer who travels with the teams whenever we are playing an away match. This will only bring good than harm to our reputation. We cannot afford to let these foreign countries sabotage us like they did. We need to take responsibility of how we want the world to see us.

Sista B 11/18/2009 11:12:39 AM
Wow,this guy is a clown, he should consider doing comedies instead of singing. He really made my week!!!

ims 11/18/2009 11:13:26 AM
oh my soul - treason??? can the parliament get any more pathetic!!! so the guy messed up, get over it!!! He will have to live with the embarrasment for a very long time! So the SA and French Gov messed up so lets throw blame else where as per the norm!! Treason I ask you you are pathetic!

Love Africa 11/18/2009 11:14:06 AM
Lets see ask the average person on the street... service delivery or Anthem been butchered what is more important. I bet you service delivery would win. If they took as much passion in sorting out the real problems maybe we wouldn't have so many street kids, murders, rape crime, dirty water.

Sinudeity 11/18/2009 11:15:38 AM
CORRUPT GOVERNMENT officials, must be tried for treason. That is all.

Andy 11/18/2009 11:15:49 AM
Suka should learn what "treason" means, then he and the clowns can really get down to business!

JIm Coveney 11/18/2009 11:18:52 AM
As a permanent residence in South Africa and proud of our National Anthem, I was appalled at the way the the anthem was sung. This should never have happend and as a nation we are rtght to protest to the French Government with regard to this. We must also ensure that for International Fixtures that proper arrangements have been made for a proper rendition of our anthem

Paul 11/18/2009 11:19:56 AM
What a waste of time debating this trivial issue ! It wasn`t his fault he tried his best ! Just move on we have far more important issues in this country to deal with !

Jemsquash 11/18/2009 11:22:30 AM
TREASON? you have to be kidding me...... Does Parliament know what Treason is - maybe they should Google it - even the oldies in Parliament should know how to use the internet.

Serioulsy poor Guy - yes it wasnt the best rendition of our anthem but the guy looked passionate and sometimes that counts. He tried his best, I would like to see half of our MPs try that hard at their job!!!!

I would not have him singing it again unless it was for one of our MPs birthdays.

Leon 11/18/2009 11:22:55 AM
Government employees stealing public money - that's treason!!

ZION PAY 11/18/2009 11:23:56 AM
Ok, lets charge Dumisani for treason for embarrasing his country. On a note more severe let us then charge those ministers who have allowed their portfolias to approach a state of chaos. We can start with health, transport, telcom, escom, oh hell the bloody lot.

Soapbox 11/18/2009 11:28:52 AM
Burn all his CDs we bought, all one of them, Ha Ha Ha!!!

Nico 11/18/2009 11:33:02 AM
In my opinion the rastaman's performance was a disgrace. It is also a disgrace that this was allowed to happen in the first place. And it is also a disgrace to be followed up with flying our national flag upside down. If we all accept this as an accident we will condone these disgraceful actions and give a thumbs up for future messes. I don't care about the portfolio committee anyway - they are a bunch of gravy train passengers! They obviously don't understand what treason means...

Bok4Life 11/18/2009 11:36:32 AM
Why am i not Surprised!! Parliament members have a scape goat so they are gonna milk it for all they can and try sound intelligent by pretending to know what they are speaking about!! Hahaha South African Parliament Members are such half wit morons! Dumisani should just be glad he isnt white otherwise these people we call government would call him a racist! Why doesnt the ORGANISERS take the blame and say "We messed up its our fault!"
