Johannesburg, South Africa - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5 shook parts of northern South Africa on Wednesday and caused some damage southwest of Johannesburg. There were no reports of serious injury.

The quake was centered near Klerksdorp, 200km southwest of Johannesburg, according to Ian Saunders with the National Seismograph Network at the department of geosciences in Pretoria.

Klerksdorp emergency services told the South African Press Association it had reports of one minor injury and damage to houses and apartment buildings in nearby Stilfontein.

Johannesburg radio station 702 reported that about 30 people had sought medical attention after being hit by falling debris or suffering stress-related ailments.

Mesh Letanta, a spokesperson for Klerksdorp emergency services, said one apartment block housing elderly people was severely damaged and had to evacuated.

"It is no longer fit for human habitation," he told SAPA.

Two high schools in the town also were evacuated after the quake caused cracks in some of the walls, he said.

Nearby mines also began evacuating workers from the shafts as several aftershocks shook the area.

Saunders told the agency the largest earthquake in South Africa hit in the Western Cape in 1969 and had a magnitude of 6.1. A quake of magnitude 5 can cause considerable damage.

sumthing from anutha coloured says... with the crime stats in sa i can understand his fear to return. but to label them 'race crimes' are wrong. if he really is that scared he should have just claimed refugee status for having been a victim of crime in general.criminals steal from the anyone who has something they want.my home has been burgled more times than i can count.each time i moved to a better suburb the number of times increased. i was targeted simply because the assumption was that i had more. i am cape coloured. the criminals were of ALL races and not all were south african. and NONE paid for their crimes. i would like to know aswell how many of these black criminals who attacked him were born in sa. i know mowbray and i think it was most likely a bunch of refugees themselves who perpetrated the crimes. its not payback from wayback. they just looking to get paid anyway they can. i dont condone any crime. and it is a crime to use the race card regardless of your race. victims of hijacking and robbery are normally chosen based on income demographics. u dont hear about that many blacks getting hijacked or burgled because they dont own a car or a house to begin with generally.there are people who have it far worse than huntley. guess he had to find something to use since just marrying a canadian didnt work out as he planned.
