Rustenburg - A soldier of 10th South African Infantry regiment shot and seriously wounded his girlfriend, an employee of Absa Bank at Zeerust, before turning the gun on himself, say.
Inspector Gabashane Moseki said the 28-year-old soldier arrived at the bank on Wednesday afternoon, and went into his girlfriend's office, apparently to eat lunch with her.
About 15:00 bank staff heard screams. The woman ran out of her office, pursued by the man, who fired several shots, wounding her twice, once in the back and once in the head.
He then turned the pistol on himself and died in the bank.
The woman is in a critical condition, and has been moved from Zeerust Hospital to Bophelong Hospital in Mafikeng.
Their names have been withheld as their next-of-kin have not yet been informed.
The weapon used was a private, licensed firearm, Moseki said.
