Johannesburg - The Mafikeng campus of the North West University was closed on Tuesday after police fired rubber bullets to disperse protesting students.
Constable Boitumelo Mokubung said students began protesting on Monday night, burning down a guards' quarters and damaging light poles on the campus premises.
"Police were called in this morning and they were stoned by students. The main culprits have been caught on the campus CCTV cameras and are been sought by police.
"It is alleged students are protesting because seven students who were expelled earlier this year have not yet been re-instated," she said.
Police fired rubber bullets at the protesting students.
Mokubeng said police were monitoring events and that the campus was quiet for the moment.
Police are investigating a case of arson. No arrests have been made.
