Johannesburg - A man was killed, his accomplice wounded and another arrested after they hijacked a vehicle in Edenvale, said North Rand police on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Cynthia Kleinhans said: "The flying squad traced the blue VW Golf to Bhotani section in Phomolong and gave chase. But the stolen vehicle overturned."
Kleinhans said the driver of the stolen car pointed a gun at police and one of the officers shot and killed him.
"Two other men tried to run away, but one was shot."
She said members of the public helped to catch the two. The injured man was taken to hospital, while the other one has been arrested.
He is expected to appear at Thembisa magistrate's court on Thursday.
Kleinhans said: "The SAPS warns that anybody who wilfully and illegally points a gun at any police officer must bear the consequences of their actions, because police will act in self-defence to protect their lives."
