Johannesburg - The N3 highway - Johannesburg and Durban bound - has been closed after a horror truck accident occurred near Heidelberg on Thursday morning.
A truck carrying boxes smashed into the back of a chemical truck that was being towed to Johannesburg.
Another truck, trying to avoid careering into the accident scene, went across the freeway and hit a BMW travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of this truck and the driver of the BMW were both airlifted to Union Hospital in Johannesburg in a serious condition.
"Traffic has been severely affected and motorists are advised to use the R23 as an alternative route," said police spokesperson, Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate.
Officials were checking the safety implications of moving the chemical truck.
"People have been called to check whether it is safe to move the chemical truck or not. We do not know when the road will open," said Tshilate.
