Krugersdorp - Elouise Karsten, the 17-year-old whose leg had to be amputated below the knee, is resting in a surgical ward at Anncron Hospital in Krugersdorp.
Anncron manager Victor Tauter told News24 on Friday that the girl's condition had "stabilised".
He said that while Elouise was in pain from the operation, she was in high spirits considering her circumstances.
Elouise had to have an emergency operation after a fun day turned into a terrible one at Hoëaut;rskool Sannieshof on Thursday when a homemade smoke bomb exploded, ripping her leg to shreds.
Tauter said the girl's parents were traumatised by the accident.
Elouise and her Grade 11 classmates were part of a procession when the accident happened. The device which exploded was part of the celebrations.
