Klerksdorp - A police sergeant has died in hospital after being shot in the chest from a parked car, North West police reported.
Director Kiewiet van Zyl said on Tuesday Sergeant Robert Tlhone, 36, was in civilian clothes when he and a colleague went to an alleged crime on the Klerksdorp/Potchefstroom road.
When Tlhone approached a parked vehicle several shots were fired at him, one hitting him in the chest.
He was taken to Klerksdorp Hospital where he died shortly after 20:00, said Van Zyl.
The alleged gunman, a 31-year-old man from Randfontein in Gauteng, apparently only realised after the shooting that Tlhone and his colleague were policemen. He helped to take Tlhone to hospital.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were still being investigated, said Van Zyl.
The alleged attacker was arrested.
