Cape Town - A lawyer who admitted stealing just more than R1m from Road Accident Fund claimants has consented to a three-year jail term as part of a plea-bargain agreement.
The Cape Times reports that Ahmed Chohan, who appeared in the Cape High Court on Monday, also agreed to pay more than R5.04m from his assets.
This included R1.42m to his victims and R1m to the criminal assets recovery account to fight further crime.
As part of the plea bargain, he would turn state witness against his former partners, Hoosain Mohamed and Michael Mulligan, whose trial was expected to start in November.
In March last year, the assets forfeiture unit seized R7m in assets belonging to Chohan, including offshore investments in
the United Kingdom worth more than R6m.
