Cape Town - Lwazi Mzito, the teenage son of Western Cape police commissioner Mzwandile Petros has appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on a hijacking charge, police confirmed on Thursday.
Provincial spokesperson Novela Potelwa said Mzito, Petros' son by a previous relationship, was arrested on July 7, along with two other suspects.
The hijacking had taken place at Site B in Khayelitsha the day before.
Their case was postponed to August 7 for further investigation.
Police had opposed bail and the trio were being held at Pollsmoor prison.
Potelwa said part of the investigation would be to see if they could be linked to other cases.
She said Mzito was not getting any special treatment.
"Actually, investigators have been told by the provincial commissioner that they need to follow due process. He's not going to get any preferential treatment."
She said Mzito lived with his mother in Mandalay on the Cape Flats.
Petros is married.
