ANC will stick with Zuma

2009-01-09 11:02

Johannesburg - The ruling ANC will keep Jacob Zuma as its presidential candidate in this year's election, even if a court ruling dismissing corruption charges against him is overturned, President Kgalema Motlanthe has said.

Judgment will be handed down on Monday on an appeal by prosecutors against a decision to throw out bribery, fraud and other charges against Zuma in September, which suggested there was high-level political meddling in the case.

Re-opening the case could hurt ANC president Zuma's image and almost certainly overlap with his campaign for the presidency in a general election expected around March or April.

It would also create political uncertainty in Africa's biggest economy and make investors uneasy.

In an interview with the Mail & Guardian, Motlanthe said the African National Congress (ANC) would stick by Zuma.

He said that if the ruling is overturned, "whatever happens thereafter must run its course, even if he is charged".

"He remains the ANC's contender for presidency of the country in this year's elections," Motlanthe added.

Zuma prepared to negotiate

The Star reported on Friday that Zuma is prepared to negotiate with prosecutors if the Supreme Court of Appeal rules the charges against him must stand.

It said Zuma's lawyers had spent months in talks with the National Prosecuting Authority in case the court rules against him.

The prosecution of Zuma, frontrunner to become state president, has divided the ANC and led to the removal of former president Thabo Mbeki, who was accused of interfering in the case, an allegation he denied.

If the court decides Zuma's case should be re-opened, it could give political ammunition to a new breakaway party led by Mbeki loyalists challenging the ANC's dominance of South African politics since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The pressure by the SACP and Cosatu to get Zuma elected as president (so they could then manipulate him to their own ends) is the best possible thing that could have happened for SA. Without Mbeki's sudden dismissal, COPE would not have happened, and South Africa's future would have been much bleaker. The ANC really shot themselves in the foot by doing this and it is wonderful to behold!

Just Me 1/9/2009 11:18:42 AM
..... JZ....please let Julius Malema run for president afterwards. There is certain to be no ANC after that!!!!

John 1/9/2009 11:20:15 AM
I am tempted to ask questions to NPA. I hope they will give public a clear explanation as to why they have been investigating the President of the ANC for many years? Why they went to public to announce the investigation of the President of the ANC?

RUDOLF 1/9/2009 11:20:45 AM
Of course the ANC will stick with Zuma. The reason is simply that it is immaterial to the leadership whether they support a "tainted" person. Majority of them are "tainted" anyhow. Which pot will call the kettle black? The whole Zuma debacle is of academic interest. It will not go anywhere.

kenzito 1/9/2009 11:26:35 AM
JZ asked for his day in court, why is he now trying to avoid it. You're giving us certain impressions MR JZ.

Alien Dude 1/9/2009 11:29:05 AM
Bud....what planet do you live on?? Let me help you ; 1) he has been linked to accepting a bribe and 2) the public has a right to know when a political "leader" is implicated in a crime.

Steve 1/9/2009 11:30:41 AM
Huh, I'm tempted to ask JZ why he has moved heaven and earth to stay out of court and why his financial advisor admitted to 'only' bribing him to the tune of R1.3m during his asset forfeiture hearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Piet 1/9/2009 11:32:05 AM
Zuma should get his vaseline ready, he's gonna need it

Filemon 1/9/2009 11:33:57 AM
if he is innocent? And the ANCircus still forwards him as the next Prez? Watch the rand overtake the Zim dollar

Ukhandampondo 1/9/2009 11:36:35 AM
If he does, then Thabo Mbeki will be in deep deep trouble. Afterall he's the one who took the R30 mil bribe and gave it to the ANC for elections. He was too stupid to unleash his dogs on Msholozi hoping for passive aggression from Zuma loyalists.

Boer 1/9/2009 11:38:33 AM
One thing that has become clear is that this lot have zero brains... I feel so sorry for the poor in SA who pin their hopes on this clever bunch! The ANC is falling apart and I reckon COPE was only the start of it! Go Terror!

Jim (Mac the Boer) 1/9/2009 11:39:25 AM
Contender/Candidate for President of SA. Nope, factually incorrect. As the leader of the party that hopes to win the election he COULD be nominated by the ANC MPs in Parilament to become President. However, if the NPA's case is factual I would rather see him as a candidate for model prisoner of the year in or about 2019. COPE/DA/ACDP coalition? I wonder...

cynic 1/9/2009 11:41:35 AM
...where the country is sucked dry by politicians on the gravy train. The ANC had had the opportunity to disprove the widely held notion that Africans don't mind corruption, even when it makes the alleviation of poverty impossible, but blew it - probably because so many at the top have similar skeletons in their cupboards.

clive 1/9/2009 11:43:01 AM
Can we expect anything different from a corrupt regime and remember the are all comrades

Jim 1/9/2009 11:43:53 AM
John - maybe the NPA are investigating the president of the ANC because he is a criminal fraudster with the ethics and moral fibre of a jackal - ever thought of that?

JBird 1/9/2009 11:48:06 AM
We slip even further down international corruption ratings every year but yet nothing is done at the top. The people dont realise the true cost of corruption as its affects are often hidden from view. I just hope that our leadership will find the true spirit of there job to serve the people for the people.

dalton 1/9/2009 11:49:21 AM
I think people have already setence JZ befor his day in court. why dont you leave the guy alone after all i'm going to vote for him. i'm tired of those pretending whites who dont love blacks please go and vote youre DA.

The Damned SA 1/9/2009 12:00:42 PM
I hope zuma gets what he deserve & hope the SA Public will open its eyes & see the lying cheating man that is our presidential candidate 4 the anc(african national corruption) why we have so many poor people is coz of greedy man like zuma & Co. who steals money that could have been used to build houses for the poor & y some people protest for this man shows how stupid the SA public really is. Lets hope a miracle happens........

Phil 1/9/2009 12:04:00 PM
Typical stubbornness of the ANC. They will never back down or admit a mistake, no matter what the cost to the country. Glad I'm leaving in 4 weeks.

Jos 1/9/2009 12:04:03 PM
May we, as a country, survive the next number of years if JZ is elected. He must have great personal attributes to overcome the mud that is yet clinging to him

terryt 1/9/2009 12:04:13 PM
If u ever wondered if the ANC put the country's well being or the party first...you have your answer right there. No real concern for the poor and disadvantaged..even if it destroys investor confidence...they must have Zuma. Why??

Just me 1/9/2009 12:04:47 PM
I have turned a politician in the past months and i have noticed how Cope is hiring all the bad people most of them implicated in certain issues. why then should i not stay with the Devil i know that going for the same thing in different clothing. SA work up and smell the coffe and go around the country and see how our country has improved from the old Boer years we live in a far much better society that requers all to support and cherish. Go visit our uncle Bob and tell me what you think.

Nontsikelelo Macasa 1/9/2009 12:13:47 PM
It is only now, after the formation of COPE that we realise that the ANC couldn't do anything for 14yrs because of the people who were sabotaging the programmes, delaying the processes of service delivery to the people. They were causing conflicts within the Organisation. Now they are preaching the progress, How? You can not perform mirracles with a hard stone heart, they hate Zuma but they claim that they can be there for people. ANC managed to forgive whites but why can't they forgive Zuma.

j.P 1/9/2009 12:21:13 PM
This is extremely fair: JZ's financial advisor is jailed for briding JZ. The fraud involves MY (public) money. Now I have to help JZ spend more millions through my tax money being used for his legal fees... Go JZ for president!!!

JB 1/9/2009 12:24:11 PM
I really hope that law and order will return to this beautiful country. As we like animals on our currency, I would like to suggest the baboon to replace the lion once we are in par with Zimbabwe.

Simple 1/9/2009 12:24:30 PM
I can't understand what the debate is all about. Mr Shaik was found guilty of bribery. Surely the person he brided is equally as guilty of accepting a bribe - end of story...Pls can somebody educate me as to why its not this simple?

Jabu Pule 1/9/2009 12:25:01 PM
Viva ANC.

Simply Siphiwe 1/9/2009 12:25:42 PM
Let them say what ever they want to say JZ, Umshini wa kho will deliver you from all evil as usual and you will have a better life with national team wives.

Francois 1/9/2009 12:25:43 PM
No OBVIOUSLY John cannot think for himself?

Juan 1/9/2009 12:27:43 PM
Investigating him for 8 yrs?? I am no politics supporter but this is absurd

malcolmx 1/9/2009 12:28:34 PM
They'll need another Truth & Reconciliation committee if the ANC loses power in years to come. It will need to be held over a ten year period though. Even the evil apartheid regimes lies are nothing compared to these ANC mamparas.

Disenchanted 1/9/2009 12:30:38 PM
I wonder if Barrack Obama would have got the job if he had 4 wives and one in waiting as well as criminal charges being investigated against him. It makes you think....doesn't it. No wonder SA does nothing about our neighbouring president to the North, Mugabe. Makes you think....doesn't it

Jannie 1/9/2009 12:31:18 PM
If JZ wants to retain respect, the noble thing for him should be to step back, and see this court case through.

Gee 1/9/2009 12:31:25 PM
Ya Ukhanda u sound like you are lack legal know how but i don't blame you,I blame people you subscribe to, join COPE maybe they will help you.

Zumophobia 1/9/2009 12:38:39 PM
I am no ANC fanatic, but it has been ANC's tradition to have the siting president become the president of the country. We would thus expect Zuma as the president of the ANC to become the president of the country. But it all lies in the hands of ordinary s africans whether they want Zuma to be the president or not. personally, I feel he has a bad image already and is not the most appropriate person for the high rank in the country.

Andre 1/9/2009 12:40:30 PM
There goes more taxpayers money down the drain. The fact that Shabir Shaik was charged is sufficient to charge Zuma without needing further hearings which seem to drag on for years on end. He will never go to jail because 1. the ANC is corrupt 2. There will be political meddling by the ANC 3. They will threaten the judges accordingly and kill like animals to get their dirty way just like it happens in the bush in the rest of Afrika.

Puff 1/9/2009 12:40:48 PM
As South African citizens we need not lack understanding before we start pointing fingers at each other. Politics are a dirty business and that's a fact, whether JZ is quilty or not, like any other South African he also has rights to defend himself before the court of law, if what he was doing now by challenging the decision to appeal and possibly re-charge him was wrong, then the courts wouldn't have allowed him to. We are not judges let the law run its course!
