Cape Town - An off-duty policeman has been shot dead in an attempted hijacking at his home in Mandalay, Mitchell's Plain.
Superintendent Nina Kirsten says 37-year-old Inspector Phumzile Nyawula was shot after he had parked his car in his yard.
"His sister heard voices and footsteps outside and went to investigate. She saw three unknown men trying to rob her brother.
"One of the robbers pointed a firearm at her.
"She tried to escape and heard a shot being fired. Nyawula was found dead with a bullet wound to his head."
The robbers attempted to steal Nyawula's car, but were unsuccessful. His service pistol was stolen.
The robbers apparently fled on foot, Kirsten says.
