Uitenhage - An 18-year-old matric pupil from Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape is in hospital with meningitis, a hospital spokesperson reported on Thursday.
The night supervisor of the Cuyler hospital in Uitenhage, who would not to be named, said the boy's condition was serious but stable. He was in the intensive care unit and his parents were with him, she said.
The parents asked that the boy's name not be released.
The boy apparently fell ill earlier in the week while on a rugby tour to Adelaide. His parents lived in Kirkwood while he attended the Brandwag High School in Uitenhage as a boarder.
All the boarders at the school have reportedly been placed in quarantine.
Three people died last week in a meningitis outbreak in Potchefstroom in the North West province.
