Johannesburg - Metro police on Friday afternoon said no arrests have been made in connection with a horror accident that claimed the lives of a father and his 11-year-old son and left three others seriously injured.
Manish Singh, 30, and his son, Akshay were killed and three people injured while at a street racing meeting in Woodmead Drive in Sandton on Thursday night, emergency service ER24 said
Spokesperson Nick Dollman said there were about 500 people standing on the middle island in the road, from where they could watch the racing, when the accident happened at about midnight.
According to witnesses there was no scheduled race on at the time of the accident.
Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the driver of a white Toyota swerved to avoid a green Golf which had made a U-turn in front of him.
The driver of the Toyota lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Singh and his son, as well as two vehicles that were parked in the middle island.
The drivers of the two vehicles were seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.
Minnaar said the drivers had been standing outside their cars when they were hit. One driver had a fractured leg, while the other sustained back and neck injuries.
Singh and his son died on the scene from "massive blunt trauma".
Minnaar said spectators then shot at the Toyota and the mob severely assaulted the driver before he fled the scene.
He was later found and brought back to the scene.
Minnaar added that the man had been seriously assaulted but he wasn't sure whether he'd been taken to a hospital.
He said police were investigating two cases of culpable homicide.
