Cape Town - Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils has given Cape Town mayor Helen Zille an assurance that any spying on her is not being conducted by state agencies, Kasrils' office said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Lorna Daniels said Kasrils met Zille, who is also leader of the Democratic Alliance, and her husband Johann, at the minister's Cape Town office on Thursday morning.
"She raised her concerns, and the minister was able to convey to her that it was not the National Intelligence Agency or any other state institution... because we had checked that out," Daniels said.
Zille said last week that she had information that a former National Intelligence Agency (NIA) operative had been instructed to spy on her.
She said her husband had answered a phone call at home and heard recordings of her voice being played back.
"The minister has offered to assist her in resolving her concerns," Daniels said, noting that the NIA offered counter-surveillance services.
Zille earlier raised the issued with President Thabo Mbeki, who arranged for Kasrils to contact her.
DA communications director Paul Boughey confirmed Thursday's meeting.
