Pietermaritzburg - The son of a farmer was shot dead when he surprised robbers at his father's home in Rietvlei on Thursday, said KwaZulu-Natal police.
Captain Joshua Gwala said the men escaped in David Varty's vehicle, leaving him dead outside the house.
Varty was shot in the head outside the house.
His father, Barry Varty, was attacked early in the morning by armed men.
They forced him to open the safe, took five firearms and an undisclosed amount of cash.
They left him handcuffed inside the house, but their flight was interrupted by David Varty's arrival.
Gwala said the car and men were still missing, but all five firearms were found abandoned near the house.
Police later freed Barry Varty, who was uninjured.
