Polokwane - A Limpopo man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and setting her bed alight in an apparent attempt to prevent her from sleeping in it with other men.
The 31-year-old from Matlala near Polokwane found his girlfriend sleeping alone about 22:00 on Monday. She woke up and told him she wanted to break up with him.
"She apparently told him she no longer loved him and he hit her on the head with a blunt object, slightly injuring her," said Captain Mohale Ramatseba of Capricorn police.
The man then allegedly accused the woman of leaving him for other men and using the bed as a ‘stadium’ for sex.
He set the bed on fire and told the woman that no man would ever sleep in it again.
He fled and the woman's neighbours helped put out the fire before it spread to the rest of the house.
The woman was treated at hospital for the injury to her head and was discharged.
The matter was reported to the police who arrested the man on Tuesday afternoon on charges of assault and arson. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
