Mafikeng - A nursing sister at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital was fatally wounded when a gunman fired several shots at her and a doctor companion, say police.
Inspector Job Mothibi said the alleged gunman was stopped by security staff at the hospital gate in the early evening. He said he was looking for a sister on the staff, and was told she was still on duty.
The man left, but apparently lay in waiting outside the gate.
When the sister eventually drove out, accompanied by a doctor from the hospital, he stopped the car and fired nine shots at them. Two shots hit the sister and one the doctor, while a third bullet struck a passer-by in the shoulder.
The sister was certified dead by the hospital's emergency staff. The doctor was admitted to the intensive-care unit, and the passerby was treated at the casualty ward.
Mothibi said the names of the sister and the doctor would be released when their next-of-kin had been told.
The police would like to talk to "Lassy" Kgoethe, whom they believe can help them with their investigation, said Mothibi.
Anyone who met "Lassy" or saw a maroon-coloured Audi with registration number CJJ 466 NW can contact Inspector Maiketso on 072 539 1747 or Inspector Masilo on 082 479 2328.
