Durban - A local speedster was fined R35 000 or 12 months' imprisonment after he was trapped travelling at 243 km/h on the south coast N2.
Jason Evans was caught near Ellingham on March 17 2006.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department spokesperson Nonkululeko Mbatha said Evans initially pleaded not guilty to the charges but he changed his plea on Wednesday.
The Witness also learnt that the car Evans was driving, a V8SS Chevrolet Lumina (ND 488 651) was later written off in a crash on Durban's North Coast Road, in which one person was killed.
The Witness could not obtain details of the accident. Inspector Terry Murphy of the Durban Accident Combating Squad confirmed the accident but could not provide detailed information.
"The accident happened on May 29 2007 and I am still collecting evidence at this stage. All I can say is that we are investigating a case of culpable homicide."
It has been alleged that the vehicle had been fitted with speed increasing devices.
Mbatha said Evans paid R25 000 of the fine and is expected to pay the outstanding amount in instalments.
She said KZN Transport MEC Bheki Cele was happy with the sentence.
