Today is Million-man-march day. Did you know?

I sure as hell didn't... The first real bit of information only filtering down (way-way down where I reside) yesterday morning when a caller phoned in to John Robbie's breakfast show on 702.

The ensuing conversation went a bit like this: John Robbie: "...but what's the point, what purpose does the march serve?" Caller: "...well what else is there to do John?" The rest of the two-man debate basically circled around mentioned central issue with no clear winner at the end... quintessential politics.

"I am the future" states the official petition website, www.millionmanmarch.co.za. "United Against Crime" they say. "I may not see tomorrow!" it exclaims. "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing," they declare.

The first question I have is where was the marketing behind this initiative? The caller (who is taking part today) did not have exact details and this was the day prior to the big march to head-in-the-sand-ville.

Where was the VUKA ad sponsored by M-NET, the Pick n Pay sponsored badges, t-shirts, caps? Where were the billboards of encouragement courtesy of MTN and Vodacom - where were the united front by business leaders who are so "concerned about crime". No sponsors names on the website, no mention of Joburg Metro offering to bus people to the march - zip.

Hubert H Humphrey said that the right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously. And this, I fear, is the danger hanging over the (no doubt) noble intentions of the MMM. Will it be taken seriously without the backing of South Africa's business and media heavyweights?

Will it work

Will it stir an emotion, some action, some fluttering of honest intent from the powers that be, or will it be seen as a failure, a depiction of dissent from a sad few - will uncle Charles address the crowd and tell them they can leave these shores if they don't like it?

In the midst of the war on Iraq, millions of people marched in evolved democracies to show dissent and disgust at the status quo. Did it stop the war? No Mr Robbie, but it showed general public dissatisfaction with those responsible. Tony Blair suffered at the hands of this wave of public outrage and so did George Bush's Republican Administration.

"In a democracy, dissent is an act of faith," says J William Fulbright and, let's be honest, at this point in time "faith" is the only thing most South Africans have to hold on to.

Faith that their pleas will not fall on deaf ears. Faith that the future is not lost. Faith, that through the determined actions of many, change will be affected in the hearts of few.

There will not be a million people marching to the Union Buildings today - there will be 50 million because no true South African scoffs at the notion of someone doing something to protest the violence, the misery and the destruction of our nation.

Today they march for us. Today we should be proud of them, and proudly South African.

Half the million that will unddertake the march don't have jobs, another quarter are illegal immigrants, yet another eighth don't know half the reason they are taking part in the march but they go anyway because they like the dancing and singing, one sixteenth are bound to be feminists who would have none of this men only march. The one sixteenth that's left over are the ones that should actually be there. That sounds about right for SA, the minority of good people being swamped by the thugs.

MP3 6/10/2008 8:39:57 AM
Criminals will laugh at this march. I too heard of this march for the first time yesterday. Where the heck did ppl hear of this thing? Maybe if I'd known sooner I would have gone. As far as its impact is concerned. Don't expect change. Our government isn't into listening to the strife of it's nation. It's into self-gratification in whatever means possible & as quickly as possible.

Metallica Man 6/10/2008 8:42:43 AM
Good article, great idea, etc. Our Prez however has decided that there are more pressing issues that need to be dealt with so he will not be attending the MMM. Pity. Perhaps organising the MP's pension fund has his attention or Mad Bob is coming to tea. Could even be that his travel arrangments to (Insert Country Here) need his signature. On a serious note will the participant of the MMM be singing the old SA song "We are Marching to Pretoria, Pretoria"... Have fun guys!

Greg 6/10/2008 8:43:13 AM
The cynic in me says that the criminals that everyone is marching against will be having a field day with all the empty houses. That and the fact that there will be a heavy police presence at the march means there will be no-one around to stop them from breaking into houses today!

Sinudeity 6/10/2008 8:44:09 AM
Government officials dont give a 5h17 about us. We dont have access to crime stats. When they DO release the crime stats, its been fiddled with. As an example, SA had a record number of tourists last year. 9 million folks visiting our country. Turns out, that they INCLUDED illegal Zimbabweans into the tourist stats. In the end, the stats were out by 5(?) million people. How can we trust the crime stats to be accurate?

James 6/10/2008 8:44:23 AM
The Million Man March will do nothing to stop the crime rate. The government has heard all the complaints and has done nothing. Since the march was not even organised properly it will be a thousand-man march at most. Get real, South Africa. Crime is a crisis, not a festival.

Olivia 6/10/2008 8:44:30 AM
I didn't know about the march until this morning!! I agree, the marketing sucks! I would have liked to participate, but would probably have to do research for what who where and when. It's actually a shame that there isn't proper marketing for this, the whole country should know what is happening in pta today!

charlie 6/10/2008 8:46:45 AM
And if the ANC does not listen to a million people it will show their true colors and their real toughts on crime. Well done to everyone who is attending . Great work , and to the organisers as well.

Calvin Mkhize 6/10/2008 8:52:53 AM
The so called million a man march is a farce and purely a public stunt. I would advice these marchers to join the SAPS as reservists and be involved in the community protection forums. I don't think this hundred a man march will reduce the crime rate. The solution is to dissolute the Scorpion and integrate it to the SAPS in order to fight crime. Be proactive by involving yourselves in the fight against crime, instead of marching and moaning all the time.

JB 6/10/2008 8:57:18 AM
We all need to stand together and fight/kill this barbaric act. Good will always defeat evil.

bongani 6/10/2008 8:58:05 AM
This is a very good initiative. I know we all cry because of people who rob us and take our property, but I always say those are few individuals. The real criminals are people who buy stolen goods. Without demand there is no supply. I don't want to sound stupid, but I always wonder, what if security companies are the ones who are perpetuating crime??? Just think about it.

s.s. 6/10/2008 9:00:32 AM
I was also not aware of the march till yesterday. I think it is a wonderful idea and next time they arrange one - if I know about it, I will most likely take part. I also think with more advertising they will have many more "marchers"! Good Luck to the organisers for today I hope it goes well. My thoughts are there, even though I am not part of the march today - next time!

Thokozani 6/10/2008 9:01:22 AM
It's a good concept but i'm just very sceptical about the impact it's going to bring. Look as long as we still habour criminals in our homes as communities we can have billion man marches they won't make any difference. What's the point on you showing solidarity with the march and go back to Soweto, Midrand, or wherever else and buy stolen goods. We just have to be true to ourselves then we may win.

MaLeFaCtOr 6/10/2008 9:01:48 AM
The marketing was sufficient. Knew about the march since it's inception. Those that don't know yet probably don't even know crime is raging in our communities. I'm one in that million.

Amy 6/10/2008 9:01:57 AM
This march is lame, its just a testosterone drive. In any case in most of the robberies we see the man gets shot and its the woman that is left to plead. Men clearly don't know how to handle a tense situation, so excluding women from this silly march is not that helpful.

Undertaker 6/10/2008 9:04:55 AM
THERE WAS NO SITUATION IN THIS COUNTRY WITH XENOPHOBIA AND NO SITUATION IN ZIMBABWE, DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THAT THIS GOVERNMENT OR PRESIDENT WILL CARE THAT WE LAME ASS SOUTH AFRICANS BRAVE THE COLD TO MARCH TODAY, THABOOOOO NEVER EBVEN GIVE REASONS TO DESMOND DUBE WHY HE WILL NOT BE THERE TODAY, IF YOU SOMEONE IMPORTANT LIKE TOKYO SEXWALE THEN MAYBE SAPS WILL WORK, OTHERWISE PRAY TO GOD YOU LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE YOUR GRANDCHILDREN GROW UP

LH 6/10/2008 9:07:23 AM
I could not have said it better BB - I salute them and we all should, after all it is us they are marching for. Well written.

TK 6/10/2008 9:07:47 AM
Its sad that we eventually have to march to put focus on crime. This country has too much crime..way too much crime, we have to elevate the issue by a march like this. Hope the politicians listen!

Sistah 6/10/2008 9:07:53 AM
I cannot be there because of my obligations to my employer (who either doesn't know about, or doesn't support the MMM initiative). I agree with Brandon; the planning behind the MMM was lacking in many aspects but even so, I am wholly behind the idea of all South Africans making it known that we refuse to accept the status quo - our society is being overrun by criminality. United We Stand, Divided We Fall. Perhaps we should concentrate on a campaign and not a single event... just a thought

ST 6/10/2008 9:09:28 AM
As unfortunate as it is, it will make no difference because the leader of our country does not care about crime. Umpteen petitions have been handed to him, which he has just ignored, simply because he is not interested. So, well done to those that have made the effort to march, but our President has no respect for your efforts.

Maanda 6/10/2008 9:10:04 AM
This is waste of time, energy, and money. Can?t we do something else? What about Poverty and unemployment? You can?t address crime issues without dealing with poverty and unemployment. It won't work!!!!!!!

shane 6/10/2008 9:10:10 AM
This march is a very noble idea and the organisers should be praised for their efforts to try and do someting as well as everybody that is going to be there.Unfortunately this march will be forgotten in a week unless the march turns into a riot(what I doubt will happen). We will stil have the same problems when the crowds leave and at least a couple of them that was there will be murdered or raped in their homes tonight.

Karen 6/10/2008 9:11:25 AM
Its sad that there is no backing by the big corporates, but still the people will do what they can. What else can we do? I think the idea is great and if it is carried off in a peaceful manner, it should at least quietly tell government that the people have had enough of their incompetance. It is also a symbol of the solidarity of the nation on this common demon that haunts all our lives. Thank you Desmond Dube for organising this initiative, I will be there in spirit....

TaurusaurusRex 6/10/2008 9:11:55 AM
Poor advertising, poor motivation, poor information - the people don't know about it, they weren't offered ways to immediately find out about it (he was on the radio for goodness sakes) and where is the motivation in getting people to join at the last second?? Poorly planned businesses often fail and so do poorly planned events. It would be splendid to have people join up as South Africans against a common scouge - crime - and have them forget about any differences. Plan better - it could be gr8!

Rs4fan 6/10/2008 9:12:56 AM
look man! you must be one ignorant brother! the Million man march has been in the news for a while now! with interviews with Desmont and announcement on public radios for weeks!

cedb00 6/10/2008 9:15:13 AM
Brandon, they should have appointed you marketing manager of this event. However, I am sad to say, even IF 1,000,000 people turn up on Thabo's "voorstoep", and even IF the MTN's, Vodacom's and Pick & Pay's of this country get involved, alas, nothing, and I say again, NOTHING, will change, because nothing, NOTHING, will be done. I applaud the effort, I deplore the reaction I know we are going to get!

Karen 6/10/2008 9:16:18 AM
I was listening to radio this morning where somebody from the police force, was saying that the public should take more of an active role in crime prevention, I felt sick. I was on my way to work where half of what I earn today will go to the government. In return I expect them to do their job. Their answer is - do it yourself? Its like paying my domestic worker and then having to clean my own house because she is sitting around doing nothing and stealing the food and clothes I have worked for.

James 6/10/2008 9:19:53 AM
I have a better idea: forget the march and protest against crime at the next election. If you are not a rich black person the ANC has nothing to offer you.

Isefas 6/10/2008 9:22:02 AM
If you march today and you don't address the root cause of crime in our dear land..Then its like a watch dog backing without teeth. Try but won't make a change and criminals are instead getting smart and aggresive because of in-equalities that are practiced out there? And I wish them succes in their initiatives.

emmex 6/10/2008 9:22:19 AM
There is power in togetherness and power in numbers. The people who commit crime, need to see that there are many standing up against what they are doing and that their actions will not be tolerated.... Faith IS taking action... - March ON!!

Chris 6/10/2008 9:22:23 AM
Brandon, there are quite a few facts in your article which are misrepresented. In the first place we are not a nation but a hotch-potch of people occuping the same patch of earth, secondly there are not 50 million south africans because aids has already taken it's toll and foreigners make up quite a substantial number of those left, thirdly there are a very few true south africans because a great number of them make their living from crime and fourthly your present powers do not care.

DW 6/10/2008 9:23:03 AM
I would like to know how many of the marchers' homes get broken into whilst they are marching against crime. The criminals could not care less about your marches and they achieve nothing in the fight against crime.Join your local CPF/neighbourhood watch etc. Do something constructive against the criminals.Shouting at government or protesting has never achieved anything. See www.suncellwatch.co.za for an initiative that is working wonders in our area.

Fluffybunny 6/10/2008 9:23:24 AM
Hey Ed why am I not surprised that you did not publish my comment also highlighting the media's - (yes News24 included)total lack of support for this initiative. How many stories have you run in the past week in the run-up to the march? And even this morning - have you reported ANYTHING about what's happening in Pretoria yet today?

JF 6/10/2008 9:23:52 AM
The time for marches are long over. Catch the criminals and string them up from the nearest tree/lamppost. Damn the constitution and the rights of criminals - castrate one rapist in public and that might give pause for thought.

kwk 6/10/2008 9:26:24 AM
There are glitches, but it is a step in the right direction. The best thing about it, is the fact that it's organised by communities of people whom the government claims are agreeing with government in saying crime is not that bad. This will sink the argument that crime is a perception created by white people to undermine the ANC.A DA dominated march, even if it's well organised, will NEVER have the same punch. The prospect of a fall in mass support is the only thing that will ellicit action.

Bokamoso 6/10/2008 9:26:34 AM
i certainly knew about it and its objectives and i believe it will make the huge impact and make a difference.Let us stand together and fight crime in this country because Desmond Tutu was said" just do bit by bit because it is those bits that will overwhelm the world" Good one Desmond Dube!!!

Vuyo 6/10/2008 9:34:42 AM
I knew about the march since like about two months ago. It was on radio, they had ad's on SABC, the guys appeared on Morning Live twice!!! Morning Live has been reminding the viewers about this everyday for a week now!!! Morning Live was broadcasting LIVE from the Union Buildings today, so are other radio stations. I agree the marketing might not have been massive but this has been going on for more than two months!

Jann 6/10/2008 9:37:06 AM
I think that this is a good initiative and I really hope that they get the crowd they are expecting. I don't think the government will take it too seriously, but it's time that the people showed solidarity and stood up for what they believe in. If I lived in the area I would definitely be there.

MORONS 6/10/2008 9:38:33 AM
People have jobs, so why march and protest on a weekday! Organizers must be the same people who run the country.....totally useless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nothing will come of this even if u had to march 2 million people on the government....keep dreaming!!

emmex 6/10/2008 9:39:17 AM
People in this country who complain the whole time, can only justify their complaints when doing something themeselves, other than just complaining. Complaining and negative talk is like a cancer...It just supports the negative actions because talking negatively, IS a negative action. Bring change by speaking life...focusing on life will "kill" death. We can't continue just focusing on the problems. Solutions come when we find hope in what we have. So please only complain when you do your part.

Graham 6/10/2008 9:39:22 AM
Politics is about power and money. The Governmnet will do nothing, and I mean NOTHING, until they believe there position in power is under threat. The ONLY way to get things changed is to mobilise the vote against the ANC at the next election. We will also then see how committed the ANC really is to democracy.

Martin 6/10/2008 9:40:05 AM
Admire this project but: They do not care for 40 Million Plus so..... Negative? Got reason to be!

Sarah 6/10/2008 9:41:55 AM
Nice article, point well made. To Calvin Mkhize, Pray do tell, what have YOU done today to try and repair our country.

genaral 6/10/2008 9:41:56 AM
Calvin Mkhize uyahlanya including all those who are making a mountain out of ant hill...I knew there wud comments like these. If something comes from a black man doosayers rejoice bcoz they claim it's gonna be a flop, I hope Desmond Dube proves you wrong today. Afterall, crime doesn't affect white people only in SA, black men too...VIva MMM and Desmond Dube, aluta continua!

PC 6/10/2008 9:43:36 AM
Hopefully the march will act as a catalyst for businesses to start taking initiatives. Remember the FNB campaign a while back that was halted by government?

emmex 6/10/2008 9:44:30 AM

Marching does not help. We have been conditioned to march whenever we are unhappy, but it only makes the polotitions happy because tomorrow all is forgotten. My forefathers took decisive action to rectify a situation...we have been conditioned to do nothing.

Godfrey 6/10/2008 9:45:31 AM
Johannesburg - Actor Moto Silumo was shot dead in Wanderers Street next to Park Station in Johannesburg, the SABC reported on Tuesday. Silumo was best known as 'Tiny' in advertisements of a popular chicken fast food outlet. Silumo's brother, Richard, told the SABC that he was shot three times and died on the scene. The actor's death comes on the eve of the anti-crime "million" man march in Pretoria. Police are investigating the murder, the SABC reported.

Juan 6/10/2008 9:50:13 AM
Government's too arrogant to listen to 'the people'. Most people want the death penalty back but they are to pathetic to re-instate it. Let's all vote against the anc in the next election, and give 'em a simple lesson in the concept of 'democracy'!

Willem 6/10/2008 9:53:29 AM
I need about the march for quite some time now, but I think they clearly didn't think it through properly, had the march been over a weekend or on a public holiday, I would have been there and I'm sure it wouldn't have been a problem to get a million people involved. Having it on a Tuesday was the big mess up, how many people are going to take the day off to go attend the march? Not very many.

CTheB 6/10/2008 9:53:58 AM
Why didn't you tell anyone else? I read several South African news sites every day of the week and the first mention was yesterday about the road closures that would be happening because of the march.

SJ 6/10/2008 9:56:32 AM
A million people!!! That is a lot considering the vibe at a rugby match with only 50 000 people. I heard about the march about a month ago and then 610 000 people have already committed themselves to take part on their website. If just half of them pitch up today it will still make a huge statement. And still a lot of the comments on this page criticize the event. At least these people will today take a stand. Are you?

NM 6/10/2008 9:56:37 AM
Its all good and well that people want to march against crime.. and at least they're taking a step. However, alot more people would have joined in if we knew that some sort of good would come from it. But sadly it wont. The criminals are probably laughing at us because they know that the government will do absolutely nothing to stop crime and help it's nation.

emmex 6/10/2008 9:58:30 AM
Some people in this country did half as much as they complain It's like complaining about our leaders, but not having voted for someone else...

navs 6/10/2008 9:59:58 AM
The big question is? how is this march going to alleviate crime? Who in govt. is going to take a stance and curb crime? What are the options.

masingita 6/10/2008 10:03:15 AM
It is so sad that people can only see and say negative things about this initiative, the question is why all the negatives?, why can't we support something good. For your infomation DIDATA has send 15 buses full of their employees to go and support this initiative, Political parties will be there too, And No they are not excluding women. Some of the organisers are women, business women. Most people knew about it months ago as it was advertised on SABC Radio/TV Stations, and News Papers.

Karen 6/10/2008 10:04:06 AM
Quite a few people on this blog have said - bad organisation, it won't help, nobody cares, while you are there crime is happening etc... Well what have you done?? You are all people who will sit on your fat backsides and criticise the efforts others are making. If you could do it better why don't you? If you are not in government you should be - you have the mind(less)set. Nobody is doing this thinking that from today there will be no more crime - idiots. Its the first step...

Bra Darkie 6/10/2008 10:07:18 AM
All you guys are stupid. Seriously. You're thick. Yourself included Brandon. This "futile exercise" as Calvin Mkhize describes it, is not a crime fighting exercise, it's to raise awareness. I take you guys also believe World Aids Day or World Tuberculosis Day is meant to eradicate this two deadly diseases. Come now, support Desmond Dube and stop trying to see all the wrong things in everthing good being done in SA. You guys are the most pessimistic bunch of people i've ever come across. I think news24 should refrain from giving this Faber boy too much of a platform to spew his drivel, disguised a wit and satire or whatever he calls it.

masingita 6/10/2008 10:09:40 AM
I say good one Desmond, hope this is the beggining of a good thing, I pray that today's msg will be heard and something will be done to stop this disease called crime.

Crimebuster 6/10/2008 10:10:31 AM
I am beginning to wonder if most pple who write these blogs know what they want, did you expect a letter at your doorsteps? This march was organised a long time ago after Desmond's neighbour was brutally murdered by the usual young low lives. Please don't start asking who's Desmond now. Read and listen to current affairs. On my way to PTA.......

Lumukanda 6/10/2008 10:12:45 AM
if there are one million people willing to take the streets, there's one million people willing to do something. far from simply just marching, these people should go back where they come from, and actively stop crime. one million is a lot of people (there won't be million, but there will be a lot), you can't stop one million determined people, it's impossible, they can make the government listen. and if there's looting and burning and things like that, think to yourself, who benefits?

Brandon 6/10/2008 10:13:22 AM
Missing the point in spectacular fashion.

Fuzz 6/10/2008 10:14:09 AM
Your positivity is glorius! But what u fail to understand is that there are two ends of the minority scale (change agents and criminals). The vast majority lie in the apathetic middle and will follow if the the voice and message of the change agents is good, it's human nature, so go the one 16th, spread the word, start the snowball! And to the corporates, stand up and be counted!!

Geejay 6/10/2008 10:16:17 AM
Yea as usual the normal middle class excuses of why something won't work. Get off your comfortable little fat bums and support this if you can. Otherwise you can just leave this country, not so?

Chazz 6/10/2008 10:17:23 AM
everybody around the world had the same attitude toward apartheid protests and marches all those years ago. It creates awareness, which in time will result in pressure through media coverage. We have to believe that change is around the corner. Be it a million-man march or a miracle but we must continue to believe.

MC 6/10/2008 10:17:58 AM
For all you ignorant people, this march has been planned for months, it was advertised on SABC channels, and even some of the commentators to NEWS 24 have mentioned it! Just shows you, you're only interested in your own opinions! AND IT IS NOT FOR MEN ONLY!!!!!!!!!!

terence 6/10/2008 10:21:34 AM
why does the SAPS need the scorpions, why can't the saps be efficient on their own is it perhaps because of their values initiated by their leaders. We need more than one crime fighting unit. You dont see the american police force battling all crimes no they have the DEA targeting drug dealers and the FBI targeting serious criminal offender and for good measure internal affairs to catch the dirty cops if we had this then i'd we are in the right direction but calvin your way is 100 steps backward

MP3 6/10/2008 10:23:13 AM
FYI, instead of marching down a street I take pro-active measures to report suspicious behaviour in and around my neighbourhood. What do you do?

Les-Maada 6/10/2008 10:25:17 AM
to read some of the negative comments coming from the so called literate News24 users. The very people who always cries hell's kitchen about crime in SA are now finding ways to dig some loophole's with regard to the MMM.The ppl who've organised that March have displayed a sense of courage & diserves an appluase whatever the case maybe. But shame on you Big Mouthed, small headed,Complaining for Nothing,Mr/Mrs know alls, for ya contribution in this piece was worth ya nut Brains!!Big up to Desmond!

Neil 6/10/2008 10:26:15 AM
Is the main ou here to see or attend or is he more worried about what's happening every where else. The main police chief is on leave !!!! The march will have no impact what so ever because it does not affect the big chiefs as they are well guarded and are safe behind tight security, the bomb will explode one day, it's just a matter of time.

Filemon 6/10/2008 10:26:23 AM
So many bloggers with ignorance and apathy towards the possible success of this march. Get off your asses and make yourself heard otherwise stop complaining. It is a great idea & should be expanded. If they have one in P.E. I WILL BE THERE

Laurie 6/10/2008 10:27:32 AM
I think it's good for people to stand together, but come on guys - why didn't you make it a Saturday??? There are many of us who work/have kids to fetch etc etc. I listen to the radio constantly and I confess have not heard about this march until a few days ago ... Rarely watch any of the ANC Auckland Park branch's channels, so didn't see it there either!

NONI 6/10/2008 10:28:33 AM
It's really high time we stand up against crime and stop blaming the government for everything. I agree with the saying that without demand there is no supply. Stop buying stolen goods., Noni

James 6/10/2008 10:30:10 AM
Here is why the SAPS is inefficient: they are morons! The other day I saw a police minibus stop for petrol. The front number plate was missing (a crime) and the police officer at the wheel was smoking (poor image, unprofessional) next to the petrol pump with his window open (dangerous, idiotic).

Dr. Henry McCoy 6/10/2008 10:30:23 AM
... to eradicate crime in this country is to take matters in our own hands and rebel against the terrorist government. Rid the police, SADF and courts of criminals, reinforce them with COMPETENT people, give them a license to shoot criminals, reinstate the death penalty, and build more prisons rather than world cup stadiums, give heavier sentences to criminals. Gee, sounds a lot like a previous government this country once had. We desperately need a leader!

Mick 6/10/2008 10:31:44 AM
It's time that business and oppposition and ALL the white folk (as it's always only the blacks protesting) in SA start taking part in a big protest against crime. Bring this country to a standstill. Make the world take notice about how unhappy we are about the crime, and that government is doing nothing to solve this. We need to learn from europe how to stage a protest.

Bokamoso 6/10/2008 10:33:27 AM
You guys are displaying your sheer ignorance and stupidity to the masses, you should be ashamed.this will work no matter how many people are standing against it.good thing that you guys are not fortune teller because you'll suck big time.those who say this won't make a difference i suggest that you pack whats yours and go somewhere there is no crime.is there such place?lame excuses to support good initiatives like it won't work, president don't care,i did not know about it and i am white!idiots

colin 6/10/2008 10:33:36 AM
SABC had regular adverts about the MMM which will happen today ? this is just an indication that a majority of the users and Mr. Faber do not make use of our public broadcaster. Using SABC as a platform to inform the public is most probably the medium which will give you maximum exposure.

Lucas 6/10/2008 10:34:03 AM
Our homes will be broken into and cars be stolen while we are marching! They too know that there is a great chance of us not being there to protect our belongings but be marching instead.

Neil 6/10/2008 10:34:16 AM
Just another way goverment is blowing our money, if it's not going to corrupt officials they will find ways and means to blow it on shit!

Buffy 6/10/2008 10:38:18 AM
I can just imagine the goverments answer to this march. If any notice is taken at all!! "Keep up the good work! We all need to fight crime." Whoppeee.... I am grateful somebody is doing something, but will the goverment listen??

Resident 6/10/2008 10:40:11 AM
The State President wont even attend, so what is the point of the march, he does not even care for the people of his state. Since when has any of these anti crime marches made any difference anyway !

James 6/10/2008 10:40:59 AM
It is a nice ideal to march against crime, but it is not really going to achieve much. New leadership is the only solution. Thabo is too busy loving Bob and flying around the world denying that there are any pressing issues in the southern African region. Let's have a referendum calling an early election and get JZ at the reigns sooner. I was a sceptic, but based on Thabo's recent track record JZ can't come a moment too soon.

Gawie 6/10/2008 10:44:51 AM
..and that's the ONE that really counts: where Mbeki failed us, only Jesus can help and save us. The power of prayer is what it's all about. I recall Revd. Johan Strijdom's remarks in an earlier response: he got it awry there, but prayer is REAL and can make a VERY REAL difference! Be there, let's make it happen! Bless you all!!

Dumi 6/10/2008 10:46:11 AM
Its good that there's no sponsorship from big businesses and media as they would have been bulldozed by government. Remember FNB's petition or something like that.

JB 6/10/2008 10:49:36 AM
Thats why SA is like it is, all talk and mouns and no one is willing to do anything. Get off your butts and do something good for this country. Something good so people can stay here and fight, not to get on a plane and run.....!

Neil 6/10/2008 10:55:28 AM
We are too scared to do something, we might not have furniture to return home to!!! LOL

King of France 6/10/2008 10:56:14 AM
Nothing bad can come of it. It is quite reassuring that I'm not the only one thats sick of crime. It's because of crime and crime alone that this country sits in the situation that it's in. Everythinbg else that is wrong with South Africa is as a result of crime. Crime is poo. Poo stinks.

James 6/10/2008 10:57:38 AM
The Deaf Ears comment was not written by the same James as the previous posts. Just thought I'd set the record straight. JZ can sod off. We need Helen Zille.

Etienne 6/10/2008 11:00:59 AM
Our government has never taken responsibility for its own inactions and flaws. HIV, Zimbabwe, immigration, crime, to name but a few. Mbeki (who is now irrelevant on the world stage) was only ever interested in creating some fantasy union of Africans borne out of his own inferiority complex. He does not comprehend that South Africans are in no way similar to people from (for example) Ghana. So in stead of focussing on issues at home, he is worried about NEPAD and similar toss!

tshepo 6/10/2008 11:01:17 AM
im going to check it out, no point in complaining whilst you do nothing.

Alicia 6/10/2008 11:03:18 AM
At least he is trying to do something to alleviate the distress, hurt and anger we all feel. Anything is better than nothing. I wish I knew what we could do. Support the gentleman trying to save the Scorpions seems to be the best option. May God go with him and his helpers. Desmond, don't be put off....although I'm a woman...wish I was there.

Maanda 6/10/2008 11:03:19 AM
Who Will attend?

Pangea 6/10/2008 11:05:04 AM
I have a better idea, lets do something better, march to the poll stations next year and vote the ANC out of power.

Eidel Bock 6/10/2008 11:07:35 AM
Yes you may say I am negative but... A good enough reason not to be at work. Loyal people will struggle to get to work.People will be late for work. Businesses in the are will suffer. Will it stop criminal activities Only certain people will claim to fame. Will the goverment act on the protest. Should we not mobilise ourself instead of a march.Police force could have fiting crime intead of watching the march. What guarantee there are no criminal actors amongs the protestors there for the kill.

terence 6/10/2008 11:07:51 AM
during a week day people can't just take off work for these kind of things. I totally agree that this march is positive and a wake up call for government that SA citizens are pissed off with crim in this country but had the march been on the weekend or a public holiday made available for this event a greater turn out would have been achieved. Government should have made this day a public holiday to show how serious and committed they are to stopping crime. but we all know they dont give a dam...

Azania 6/10/2008 11:16:51 AM
The DA is behind this march using the likes of Desmond Dube to pursue their hidden agenda. Rest assured that crime is under control and its just being exaggerated by the media. Most of the people on my neighbourhood don't know anything about this march even our local street committee knows nothing about this. Normally there are meetings if there is going to be a march in my neighbourhood in order to support the cause. Be careful of falling into a trap.

Lebo 6/10/2008 11:16:57 AM
People are complaining about crime and yet find excuses not to support initiatives aimed at doing something about crime. If nothing happens it would be because you sat on your bums and expected someone to do it for you.So stand up and bring a solution to the table, stop pouring ice water on the initiatives that others take. The time to act is now.LebZ

Jimmy 6/10/2008 11:18:56 AM
Your MTNs, Vodacoms, Pick & Pays wont get involved remember ABSA or was it FNB!!!!

CTheB 6/10/2008 11:18:58 AM
Please, keep your argumentum ad hominem to yourself. You're assuming that we spend our time watching TV to have seen it on TV. As for News 24 commentators, how many is "some"? This is the first writing about it I've seen other than the road closure report in the main news yesterday. I listen to Cape Talk every day in the early morning and there was no mention of it on there, either.

Maanda 6/10/2008 11:26:13 AM
It is pity that the President is not going to accept the memorandum on behalves of the government. So what? you can easily see that there is not strong support from gov. so are we not wasting our time if our Gov. is not positively responding? I think our President was supposed to show the seriousness of this march, and stop??.

masingita 6/10/2008 11:33:16 AM
The attempt to change people is the greatest energy waste of all, not because people can't change, but because change is a growth process from within. Eric Butterworth

Truth 6/10/2008 11:33:18 AM
The apathy present in this country is a huge cause for concern! People try to do something positive, and they get laughed at, or called stupid! People here make comments like it wont have an impact etc...but think their bitching on this forum is having a huge impact! mo I am surprised most of you can turn on a PC! The fact is, the Million Man March will bring international exposure to the crime in SA! It will highlight to the world that the people are fed up, and the government is doing nothing!

emmex 6/10/2008 11:35:23 AM
The solution is not another public holiday. Being able to carry on in life is what we need. People who can make it, should go...those that can't go, should not condemn those that do go. Having another public holdiday for this, will probably just create a lax attitude. There should be NO ALTERIOR MOTIVES for marching for this. It's for the crime problem...not to play

masingita 6/10/2008 11:36:20 AM
I'd rather attempt something great and fail than attempt nothing and succeed. by: Robert H. Schuller

ebony 6/10/2008 11:46:48 AM
atleast Desmond is trying, whay are most people doing? they are just mourning.SAfricans are so full of nonsense and are always complaining.people should stop lying by saying they jdidnt know abpout the march-the ones who didnt know are the ignorant ones who never listen to the radio or watch tv. this has been going on for more than two months.
