Johannesburg - A 37-year-old man suspected of raping seven woman was arrested in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.
"His modus operandi was to drive along the N12, R28 and R500 roads offering women hitch-hikers a lift in a silver-blue Mazda sedan," Constable Busi Monoe said.
The man would then stop the car, claiming that there was something wrong with it. "He would remove the rear licence plates of his car and then proceed driving."
He then drove a few metres before he stopped the car in the bushes and allegedly raped his victims at gunpoint. He then drove off, leaving the victim behind, who, due to the licence plate having been removed, would be unable to identify the vehicle.
He was caught when police spotted his car on the N12.
There were nine case against him, seven of rape and two of attempted rape.
He was expected to appear in the Westonaria Regional Court on Wednesday.
