Stellenbosch - Four University of Stellenbosch students who allegedly shot seven female students with a pellet gun at the university last week, appeared briefly in the local magistrate's court on Thursday.
The students, all from the men's residence Wilgenhof, Piet Hiemstra, Vick Hiemstra, Altus Pretorius and Andy Irvine, were not asked to plead. They were released on bail of R1 000 each.
The case stems from an incident last Friday when the men allegedly fired at the women students with a pellet gun equipped with a telescopic sight on the university campus. None of the students was seriously injured.
The pellet gun was handed to the Stellenbosch police on Wednesday.
The four university students have meanwhile been temporarily suspended from the campus and their residence pending the outcome of an internal disciplinary investigation.
The case was postponed to September 12.
Die Burger reported earlier on Thursday that two of the students, Piet en Vick Hiemstra are reportedly the grandsons of Victor G Hiemstra the former judge president of the Transvaal.
