Johannesburg - An off-duty policeman from the East Rand anti-hijacking unit was shot once in the chest and killed by a hitman as he was walking to his home in Vosloorus on Friday night, police said.
Superintendent Andy Pieke said on Saturday that Inspector Velaphi Zwane, in his forties, was walking from a tuck shop in Godobo Street, Vosloorus to his home in the same street around 21:00 when he was approached by three men. One suspect shot Zwane in the chest with a pistol.
An eye witness told police he saw three men running away from the scene immediately after the shooting.
Inspector Zwane was rushed to the clinic in Vosloorus but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Pieke said the motive for the murder was not known and Zwane's service pistol had not been taken.
