End of road for canned hunting

2009-06-12 09:29

Elise Tempelhoff

Vanderbijlpark – It is the end of the road for South Africa’s 123 lion breeders and 3 000 canned lions.

This follows a verdict in the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein on Thursday that these semi-tame animals may only be hunted 24 months after being set free from their breeding cages.

Judge Ian van der Merwe concurred with the government that biodiversity must be protected, and that the breeding of lions in captivity with the sole purpose of canned hunting, did not aid their protection.

The lion breeders’ request that the period of 24 months in the regulations be changed to “a few days”, was dismissed with costs.

Verdict welcomed

Albi Modise, spokesperson for the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, said the government welcomes the verdict.

“This means that the reprehensible practice of canned hunting has most certainly come to an end.”

Carel van Heerden, chairperson of the South African Predator Breeders Association, which took the government to court, said it was a tragic verdict.

“It feels like someone has kicked me in the stomach.

“The practical implications of the verdict are devastating to our industry and to all the people involved in the industry. It means that 5 000 breadwinners will soon lose their jobs, and about 3 000 (semi-tame) lions will have to be put down.”

The financial implications on members of the association, and the damage it will cause to the hunting and tourism industry in South Africa is incalculable, said Van Heerden.

“We operate a perfectly legal business and will continue to seek justice.”

According to Van Heerden, the association’s legal team will now study the verdict in its entirety, and then possibly apply for leave to appeal the verdict.

Apparently, some of the farmers on Thursday threatened to sue the government due to the loss of income they will suffer due to the legislation.

Multi-million rand industry

Van der Merwe said in his verdict that lion farmers, who are currently keeping a multi-million rand industry afloat, are just worried about money and the economic losses they will suffer if the semi-tame lions must first spend two years roaming free in nature before they can be hunted.

Marthinus van Schalkwyk, former minister of environmental affairs and tourism, was taken to court by lion breeders about two years ago, when he apparently wanted to “crush” their industry with regulations regarding threatened and protected species.

According to the regulations, a lion which has been bred in captivity, must be self-sustaining for 24 months (in other words, hunt for prey), before it can be hunted.

The lion breeders said in court papers that it would mean their downfall if the animals had to remain free for that long. They called the decision irrational.

Furthermore, Modise said that while hunting makes a substantial and positive contribution to conservation management and the country’s economy, the government also needs to protect a valuable resource and ensure that the industry has a sustainable future.
“We need a clean hunting industry, free from unacceptable behaviour which could damage the country’s image.”

shooting lions who are trapped in a cage. WOW those hunters are hardcore. they should ban the hunting all together. its just about some old rich men looking to feel powerful. its so lame

THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I READ IN A LONG LONG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr Carel Van Heerden can bite me! Justice prevails ! Leave our animals alone and go and get a 9-5 job and earn an honest living. Canned Hunting is cruel and you only want to make money off of it ! Oh and feeling like you have been kicked in the stomach is not nearly close to the fear that these animals feel when they are been hunted. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. People like you and your croney money making farmers give South Africans a bad name !

SeanO 6/12/2009 9:54:44 AM
Well done, although long over due - a victory for the animal kingdom. Although I very much support "each person to his own...(thing)" I cannot understand "men" who see achievement in this type of sport. Taking a gun to a caged animal... what an achievement. Real men tackle a lion in a cage armed only with a toothpick.

linette 6/12/2009 9:54:50 AM
Why not can the breeders for hunting?

Terence 6/12/2009 9:54:52 AM
Without going into the whole moral issue of canned lion hunting, isn't it a bit of a joke hunting a 'wild' animal that's been bred in captivity for the sole purpose of ending up on the receiving end of some guys 375 H&H?

david 6/12/2009 9:54:52 AM
Excellent decision, as a keen hunter myself I find this particular form of trophy hunting the most despicable and cowardly. I think trophy hunting itself should be banned. Shoot it only if you are going to eat it.
And if you are going to shoot a predator, the odds are already stacked heavily in your favour anyway, so it should a least have a chance of coming after you if your skills are no better than those wankers that sit on the back of a bakkie and shoot a domesticated animal(aka wild predator), where is the thrill of the hunt in that.

sean 6/12/2009 9:55:21 AM
Best thing ever, stop this dispicable practice.

Simba 6/12/2009 9:55:54 AM
Play with fire...Get burnt. Find another way to make money. Well done to our government for taking a stand!

Cliff 6/12/2009 10:06:26 AM
While all tropphy hunting is difficult for some to comprehend, canned lion hunting is far more humane than wild lion hunting. Canned lion hunts result in a quick and more controlled death to the lion than a wild hunt. Wild hunts often go wrong, with the wrong animal shot (resulting in the wild genetice and wild lion social structures being horribly interfered with. Canned lions are bred to be slaughtered and bring valuable foreign currency into our developing country.

c 6/12/2009 10:09:33 AM
Hopefully that will be the end of canned hunting. If I was a hunter I would want to get my trophy fair and square and not when the lion is at a disadvantage. But then I am not a hunter and never will be.

Marianne 6/12/2009 10:15:32 AM
Well done Judge Ian van der Merwe for your verdict. Canned lion hunting is morally despicable. Shame on us for ever having allowed it to become a lucrative "business" to breed lions for the purpose of hunting them so soon after releasing them into the wild. I'm with the government on this issue all the way.

Big E 6/12/2009 10:16:21 AM
Cry us a river! Bloodthirsty tourists with no hunting skills can now go elsewhere.
The thought of a lion in a cage being shot at close range is disgusting. Personally, I think lions should only be legally hunted in the wild if people use "traditional" weapons (ie. knobkierrie)

DB 6/12/2009 10:16:23 AM
Im glad - these people claim to run a "legal" business... but what ever happened to morality!?

Shut them down for good, never mind the 24 month period. My only question, is how can one tell which lion was released last month, and which was released 24 months ago?

PRAN 6/12/2009 10:18:29 AM
This is nonsense,we should put the hunter in the wild for 24 months without guns and see if he survives.

MM 6/12/2009 10:24:23 AM
"3000 (semitame lions) will have to be put down". A real dumbass statement. Or what shot into oblivian by some hunter. Well done to the SA Government. No to all hunting!!!

Julia 6/12/2009 10:25:19 AM
Fantastic, our government is now beginning to protect our animal heritage. Well done. What sort of a person wants to gain glory by shooting an animalwith all the odds stacked asgainst it. Not even a fair fight. Can all hunters.

Joe 6/12/2009 10:25:43 AM
Canned lion huntion is a moneymaking racket that provides zero incentive for any real ecosystem conservation. Marvelous decision.

Free State Lion 6/12/2009 10:28:34 AM
Eat that, you cowards! But these lion breeders and hunters will find ways to carry on with there illegal hunting. Because that is their style!

Sean 6/12/2009 10:29:25 AM
Brilliant news!

Keith 6/12/2009 10:31:19 AM
Well done!
Mr van Heerden I wish a lion did more than kick you in the stomach!
Sis! how can you justify shooting a lion through a fence with no means of defending itself!
The only people who benefit from the income are the "farmers" (insult to genuine farmers)
Why don't you hunt the lions without firearms? hunt on foot with a dagger or short spear so the lion has an even chance.
Get with the programe!
Cliff who really benefits from the income! be honest, and prove it!

Stan 6/12/2009 10:34:05 AM
Carel....you say that you feel like you have been kicked in the stomach. You are lucky that I am not around, the pain would be a bit lower than your stomach!!!! You 'breeders are absolute oxygen thieves!!

ant 6/12/2009 10:37:59 AM
To those lion breeders who lure hunters for a quick buck - it really is a "skill" to shoot a lion stuck in a cage at point blank range - Carel van Heerden, get a job

Karel 6/12/2009 10:38:39 AM
If you shut down an illegal drug business, people lose their jobs as well...The fact that you sustain a lot of people and their families does not make it ethical all of a sudden. The canned hunting industry (that shouldn't have been there in the first place) has given the rest of the hunting industry (and conservation) in this country a bad name. If you cannot do business in an ethical way, then you should consider changing direction.

Bron 6/12/2009 10:40:17 AM
Best news I've heard all week! Today canned lion hunting, tomorrow ALL hunting practices.

Tiffany 6/12/2009 10:40:42 AM
Lets get back to basics. Animals are here for our use, yes, for food and other necessities of life. But because of this, we have an overwhelming responsibility to farm and kill animals humanely and ethically, and again, only for things essential to life. Killing a wild animal for nothing other than pleasure, is something very wrong at its core. I don't care if that animal dies instantly - its the principal of taking a creature's life for fun that is wrong.

Stuart 6/12/2009 10:40:52 AM
@David, could not have said it better.
@Cliff, have you seen some of these canned lion hunts before? Most of these hunters cannot even shoot straight, wounding the animals, causing trauma ect. If you want to hunt a lion, be a man and go on foot, like everybidy else did ages ago already...Do you think Paul Kruger shot his lions behind fences?

Karel 6/12/2009 10:44:41 AM
Well said David! As a meat hunter myself, I feel the same way about trophy hunting (and bakkie shooting) in general.

Louis 6/12/2009 10:46:04 AM
The lion breeders’ request that the period of 24 months in the regulations be changed to “a few days”, was dismissed with costs.

And who is going to regulate the 24 months? Canned hunting will carry on as if nothing happened!

Andrew 6/12/2009 10:55:02 AM
What disturbs me the most about the scenario is the lack of understanding that the accused shows. He shows no remorse or any concept of how sick a human being he is. Maybe if he were put in the line of fire and trapped in a cage he would grasp how low he has sunk. This planet does not need such people.

Marie-Louise De Cort 6/12/2009 10:56:27 AM
I love the argument that about 3000 semi-tame lions will have to be put down. These lions were going to be killed anyway by so called big game hunters!.. Now, if these lions are put down it may be done in a more humane manners. As for the 5000 breadwinners, they will have to find a job that does not depend on the unfair killing of animals.

Pat 6/12/2009 10:57:19 AM
I would pay good money to put the breeders and hunters in a cage and throw hard potatoes at them for an hour solid - this type of business would makes millions from people who care about lions world wide.

Chris 6/12/2009 11:00:17 AM
This is really the best news I've read in a while! I hate these people that they think they are so great when they kill these canned lions! Overall all hunting with a rifle is just plain bang gat! If you really think you can hunt, go and try a bow and arrow, let the prey stand a chance at least.
This canned lions are just there for the rich idiots from overseas who cant hunt (thats shy canned!) but wants to brag back home that he KILLED AN AFRICAN LION! Idiots the lot of them and even more so the people who stock the lions in the first place.
I say Great news!
