Johannesburg - The Red Ants security guards are accused of assaulting a woman and killing her husband when he came to her rescue in Eden Park, Ekurhuleni police said on Thursday.
Captain Mega Ndobe said about 50 members of the Red Ants were guarding RDP houses in Eden Park against illegal occupants on Thursday when they found that razor wire around the houses was missing.
They were asking people in the houses if they knew anything about the theft when an argument broke out with the 25-year-old legal owner of an RDP house.
"They started to assault her, beating her," said Ndobe.
Someone then phoned her 34-year-old husband who was on his way to work.
"He turned back. On his arrival he tried to intervene when he saw them assaulting his wife."
Ndobe claimed that the Red Ants beat the man with crowbars. He died at the scene.
Ndobe said police were still at the scene investigating just before 09:30. No arrests had been made, but a murder docket had been opened.
He said a group of people had gathered to find out what happened and described the situation as calm.
Congress of the People regional organiser Nzipho Kanita, who was on the scene, said the community was outraged and angry at the incident.
They wanted to attack the Red Ants, but the police were guarding them, he said, adding: "We expect to see arrests."
