Cape Town - The transfer of Cape Town's scattered xenophobia refugees to two centralised "safe sites" got under way on Thursday morning, authorities said.
The movement of 55 people housed at the Bothasig community hall got under way at 09:00, and others would be moved from a Table View hall and the Silwerstroom Strand safe site later in the day.
The city and province announced on Wednesday that they intended to consolidate about 1 600 refugees still occupying 11 community halls and two safe sites by moving them to the Blue Waters and Harmony Park sites.
About 20 000 foreign nationals fled their homes after an outbreak of xenophobic violence in the city at the end of May.
Officials say the bulk of them appear to have returned to the communities they were living in.
