Durban - Investigations have narrowed down the number of suspects to four in the search for those who microwaved a cat to death at the Pinewood residence on the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Pinetown education campus.
It is over two weeks since Tango the cat was discovered dead in a microwave at the residence and since then progress in finding the culprits has been slow. Residents were asked to submit an account of where they were on the weekend the incident occurred.
Concerned members of the public and businesses have donated R32 000 as a reward for information.
Inspector Roland Fivaz of the Kloof SPCA said on Monday: "There has been intense intimidation of students. One student told me that R32 000 is not worth his life."
Fivaz will be interviewing the four primary suspects today. "We're hoping to catch the culprit or culprits. We're hoping someone will come forward," he said. If the culprits are caught they will face possible prison sentences or fines of R20 000. They will also be expelled from the university.
