Johannesburg - A retired doctor and his passenger died when a two-seater light aircraft crashed at Hartebeesfontein in the Magaliesberg on Tuesday, West Rand police said.
Captain Tshisikhawe Ndou said retired doctor Tom Chamberlain took off from an airfield near Krugersdorp with a 61-year-old friend Tinus Hoffman.
Around 07:30 the aircraft crashed into a spinach and pea field on a farm. Both men were killed instantly.
Chamberlain's body remained trapped in the wrecked fuselage while Hoffman's body was ejected by the force of the crash.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known but would be investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority.
Police would open inquest dockets and investigate the exact cause of their deaths, Ndou said.
