Durban - High-risk patients were transferred out of Durban's Prince Mshiyeni Hospital on Wednesday following an oxygen supply problem, the Health Department said.
Spokesperson Sebe Zwane said the hospital was still open and patients were taken to other hospitals to be treated while the problem was being attended to. She urged the public to use other local hospitals for emergency cases until further notice.
The oxygen supply problem was believed to have started at 23:00 on Tuesday night.
"A team of experts from medical technology and Afrox are on site to assist in this situation. We have identified that the problem may be at the level of the oxygen distribution system. We have further shut down the main supply of oxygen to the hospital to correct the problem," she said.
The department said the casualty, intensive care and neo-natal units were affected.
"The situation is under control and we believe it will be corrected in due course," Zwane said.
