Johannesburg - A burst water pipe has trapped 3 000 workers underground at Harmony Gold's Elandsrand mine in Carletonville since Wednesday morning, said the National Union of Mineworkers.
Spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the workers had been trapped since 10:00.
He said there was no emergency exit in the shaft, adding that it had "not been maintained for ages".
The mine could not be immediately reached for comment.
