Johannesburg - A man, aged in his twenties, was electrocuted and critically injured while allegedly trying to steal a high-voltage electrical cable from a building in the Johannesburg CBD, Emergency Management Services said on Saturday.
Spokesperson Percy Morokane said the man was injured just before midnight on Friday at the corner of Delvers and Kerk streets.
The building almost caught fire due to the incident, said Morokane.
The man suffered serious burn wounds to his upper body. He was stabilised on scene and taken to the Johannesburg General Hospital.
"Those who are involved in these criminal acts (cable theft) face death or the prospects of life-threatening injuries and life-long physical disfigurement every time they are engaged in this criminal activity," Morokane said.
