Johannesburg - An 84-year-old woman was murdered on Sunday and her husband assaulted after their house in Hermanus was broken into, Western Cape police said.
"An armed response officer responded to an activated panic alarm at a their residence in Westcliff at 04:00 this morning," said Superintendent Andre Traut.
When he entered he discovered the body of Lulu Hewitson in the entrance hall of her house. She had been stabbed in the back with a sharp instrument.
Her husband, also in his eighties, survived the attack.
"Details are sketchy but we believe that the suspect or suspects gained entry to the house through a lounge window, which was removed, and possibly escaped the same way... The motive is expected to be housebreaking with the intention to steal. However no valuable items were being missed at this stage."
No arrests have been made and any person with information regarding the murder may call Inspector Gavin Horne on 079-893-9923 or Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
Substantial rewards are being offered for positive information that may lead to arrests.
