Nelspruit - The Mpumalanga health department has been placed under curatorship in an effort to improve the delivery of health services in the province, said the office of the premier on Thursday.
It said the provincial executive council had resolved to immediately set up a political committee and an administrative task team to remove obstacles and hurdles that hampered the delivery of essential health services.
Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu said: "We have expertise in the provincial government and we are collectively taking charge of the situation in our department of health.
"We are earnest to the call of building a people's contract for a healthy society in our province," he said.
The steps are a result of a damning report from the auditor-general, the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) as well as persistent complaints from communities throughout the province on the poor delivery of health services.
