Polokwane - About 90 youths were expected to appear in the Giyani magistrate's court on Monday in connection with the suspected witchcraft torching of a number of huts in the area last week.
Thirty-nine houses were burnt in four villages in the area north east of Polokwane on Wednesday and Thursday last week.
The crowd reportedly told the occupants of the houses "you are a witch" before setting their homes on fire, police reported at the time.
At one house, youths opened fire on the police who tried to stop them.
The police returned fire and 20-year-old Solly Mathebula was killed in the crossfire.
His death is also being investigated.
