Johannesburg - Some of the Technikon Witwatersrand students ordered to vacate their hostel rooms on Wednesday have been allowed to return on certain conditions.
More than 300 students were arrested during clashes in Johannesburg on Wednesday between police and students.
These followed protests by thousands of students against new regulations at the residences.
Students are no longer allowed to take visitors into their rooms for security reasons.
The institution's management announced to students outside the Auckland Park campus on Wednesday night that those who were not able to find accommodation could go back to their rooms.
Those who wanted to return could do so, however, after they signed an agreement that they would abide by the rules and regulations of the residences.
The technikon announced that students staying in the residences would have to vacate their rooms in order to protect the institution's property and the lives of others on the campuses.
The institution has set up information hotlines for students' friends and relatives. The numbers are 072 424 3164 for the Doornfontein campus and 083 399 5975 for the Auckland Park campus.
