Hestrie, Jurie heading for NZ

2007-11-19 10:01

Danel Blaauw

Johannesburg - Singer Jurie Els and his Olympic silver-medallist wife, Hestrie Cloete, are moving to New Zealand in the near future, where both intend to write their life stories.

The couple from Pretoria and their year-old child, Chrizette, are to live in New Zealand for at least a year.

Hestrie said on Saturday the family was planning to settle overseas, but did not want to say anything more.

A source close to the family revealed that the couple planned to use the opportunity to write their autobiographies and to establish their record company, Stetson Music, overseas.

The friend said there had been a buzz around for some time about their departure.

"They're definitely not emigrating. They're just taking a year off to rest and so that Hestrie can write her autobiography."

Hestrie won silver in the women's high-jump event at the Olympic Games in 2000 in Sydney, as well as at the Games in Athens in 2004.

The friend said Hestrie already had sent part of the autobiography to her publishers.

House in New Zealand

The book possibly will be published by the middle of next year.

Jurie was thinking of writing his own autobiography, but there were no definite plans for this as yet, said the friend.

Jurie, who is well-known for his Afrikaans songs such as Hoe sê Mens Dankie (How does one say thank you), has had a house in New Zealand since 2001.

The friend said: "Jurie has permanent residence, and this extends to Hestrie and Chrizette."

The couple leave early next year for New Zealand where they will have their "year-long sabbatical".

Els's 26th CD, 40 Goue Treffers - Dankie, Suid-Afrika (40 Golden Hits - Thank You, South Africa) will be released next year.

Why punish an innocent baby by naming it Chrizette? Does she look like a bag of Simba chips? Onion flavoured Chrizettes maybe?

Deon 11/19/2007 10:40:50 AM
1 - Are we bothered? and 2 - good riddance? and 3 - you can't write a book in SA?

anonymous 11/19/2007 10:41:58 AM
I wish this couple much success and happiness in NZ. SA loves you!

Pieter 11/19/2007 10:42:39 AM

Who and who??

Spike 11/19/2007 11:14:41 AM
Is there no space in the luggage for Danel Blaauw. Why someone would even write about such insignificant nonsense is beyond me.

Staying 11/19/2007 11:14:55 AM
Why would you leave sunny SA for a country with worse weather and a higher per capita crime rate?

Vernon Wolf 11/19/2007 11:21:32 AM
Good riddance...This is the best news I?ve heard in a long time?those two are as common as pink grass!

Spike 11/19/2007 11:21:39 AM
Nobody listens to his kak over hear. Why would they buy his crap over there. Anybody know about any famous singers from NZ. I know they have Kiri Takanawa. That's it.

Vernon Wolf 11/19/2007 11:28:25 AM
why would a SILVER MEDALIST be writing a book... this is what I would call celebrating mediocrity! She didn?t win gold and she didn?t overcome some huge obstacle to get to the olymoic games, other than getting married to the biggest closet case in SA, after divorcing her racist, white trash husband, there is no real story here.

Harry 11/19/2007 11:51:23 AM
I hate to see Afrikaners leaving but these two, I would help to pack.

Martin 11/19/2007 11:54:14 AM
Quite a jump you're taking here....

Corné 11/19/2007 11:54:25 AM
I am with most of these people who left comments before me. South Africa is definately NOT going to cry about this news. In fact I really don't know who bought the 25 CD's Jurie already released.

zonky 11/19/2007 11:58:00 AM
Crowded House, mate...

Disappointed 11/19/2007 12:02:22 PM
I now understand why people want to leave, and its because of these blatant "dont give a f#$K about my fellow South African" attitude people have. 99% of the comments above are about nailing this couple. To all you who have responded negatively, go examine yourself and see how you are creating this dog-eats-dog society we live in.

scorpion 11/19/2007 12:10:06 PM
I really love Jurie as he is a true south african and knows what reconciliation is but I doubt that air head of his wife from a klein dorpie and whether she will cope wthout a maid wh Cheerio, SA loves you Jurie and please Jurie teach that illiterate wife of yours manners its you who is a star and not her, a has been who was married to an illiterate racist plaas japie

DRO 11/19/2007 12:17:01 PM
The nastiness in the comments is as good a reason as any to leave - is this a reflection of current South African mentality? Vernon Wolf, I nominate you for the "bitch of the month" award...

Camel 11/19/2007 12:17:32 PM
... must be part of the brain drain ...

athlete 11/19/2007 12:26:49 PM
If my wife had the same family Hestrie has (and ex), NZ is not far enough...

Thokolosh 11/19/2007 12:37:54 PM
Yes NZ also has crime, BUT a lot less. Here somebody gets murdered every 30 minutes where in NZ a murder happens every 5 days. Per capita 18 times less than SA. 70% of our cases does not get to court, in NZ 96% gets solved and convicted (mostly family/friends clash orientated, not for cellphones). Only Columbia beats us at murders - blame NZ for choking in RWC but not more crime than SA.

Anti "self-celebs" 11/19/2007 12:42:24 PM
Please , ag big please take Joost & Amor with. I know Huisgenoot will eventually get over the shock of who to put on the cover. My condolences to NZ.

Modder 11/19/2007 12:52:36 PM
O dear! Apart from the (at least) 3 Huisgenoot cover articles, what else would they have to write about? I fear that with Hestrie and Jurie abroad, Huisgenoot might just have to close down.
