Johannesburg - Shosholoza Meyl, the long distance passenger train provider, announced on Friday that heavy rains in the Northern Cape and North West province had led to the single railway line being washed away between Magogong and Taung.
Railway spokesperson Hanlie Kotze said the railway line was expected to be open again on Saturday.
The company has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the wash-away.
Kotze said the long distance passenger trains affected are the daily shuttle train service between Kimberley and Mafikeng.
Those trains which were non-operational on Friday would only turn again on Sunday.
The train service between Johannesburg and Mafikeng/Kimberley scheduled to depart Johannesburg on Friday night will go no further than Mafikeng.
The train service between Kimberley/Mafikeng and Johannesburg scheduled to depart Kimberley on Sunday will now depart from Mafikeng at 23:21 on Sunday.
Kotze said every care was taken to reduce the inconvenience to passengers.
