Robber shot over toy gun
2004-08-01 21:50
Johannesburg - A man who pointed a toy pistol at two police officers on the North Rand was shot by one of them on Sunday, police said.
Eugene Opperman, for police, said the two officers approached a group of men who were moving from house to house in the early hours of the morning. One of them turned around and pointed a pistol at them.
The police officers then fired shots at the man, whom they believed to be armed. He was instantly killed.
The other men ran off and the police found a toy pistol abandoned at the scene.
There was now a 25 year jail term for people who use firearms - or a replica of a firearm - during a crime, said Opperman.
