Johannesburg - An eight-year-old boy was killed instantly when he was hit by a bakkie on the R61 between Libode and Port St Johns on Thursday, the Arrive Alive Campaign in the Eastern Cape said.
"The boy was on his way to the Mount Nicholas public school at about 08:00 when a bakkie hit him. He died on the spot and his body was transferred to the nearest government mortuary," said Arrive Alive spokesperson Tshepo Machaea.
"The R61 is very notorious for accidents", he said.
School principal Veronica Majiba said that "many" children have been killed on the road in the past. She said the last fatal accident occurred in November 2005.
"There is a curve in the road and drivers are speeding, making it very dangerous for our students to cross," she said.
"There is no-one there to help the children cross, because the road is being renovated."
The male driver of the bakkie has been charged with culpable homicide.
