3 die in gruesome attack

Johannesburg - A wheelchair-bound woman, her caregiver and her husband were killed in an attack on their home in Florida, on the West Rand, on Friday Johannesburg police have confirmed.

Captain Siphiwe Ndlovu said an 87-year-old woman - the mother of one of the victims - was severely wounded in the attack at 13:00.

She was stabilised and taken to hospital, he said.

She and the other three sustained head wounds, he said. "We cannot confirm with what object the wounds were made with or the motive for the killings."

Police could also not say whether anything was stolen during the attack.

The gruesome scene was discovered by the couple's daughter and her fiancé when they returned from a holiday on Friday afternoon.

"It was not clear exactly how much earlier the attack had taken place," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe.

"Several family members on scene were assisted by two Netcare 911 trauma counsellors who had been dispatched to the incident," he said.

Stokoe said there was a strong police presence on the scene.
