Sudan to lift emergency law

Khartoum - Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir said on Thursday he would lift the state of emergency in some parts of the country immediately after a new interim constitution comes into force on July 9.
"The state of emergency will be lifted immediately after the signing of the transitional constitution, except in Darfur and the Red Sea and Kassala states," Beshir declared on the 16th anniversary of the coup that brought him to power.
The state of emergency that gave security forces wide-ranging powers to arrest and detain suspects has been in place since the 1989 when Beshir seized power in an Islamist-backed military coup.
